From New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger comes the haunting short story of how one woman’s heroic vocation hides the secret guilt she’s tried to bury.
Charlie Kroft’s job at the crisis center means she’s often seen as a hero: she’s helped countless people climb out of the deepest pits of personal despair. But when one phone call thrusts Charlie into the spotlight, she must contend with the hidden pain that drives her…and with the mysterious stranger who knows the truth.
Lisa Unger’s Unknown Caller is part of We Could Be Heroes, a darkly inquisitive collection of short stories that examines heroic intentions versus their real-life consequences. Read or listen to each in a single sitting.
Lisa Unger is the New York Times bestselling author of Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six, Confessions on the 7:45, and many other books. Her short story “The Sleep Tight Motel” and her novel Under My Skin were both nominated for the Edgar Award, and her story “Let Her Be” was selected for The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2021 anthology.
My review for book 1, Pigeon Tony's Last Stand - Lisa Scottoline
REVIEW:
I definitely need to read more from this author!
This story hit close to home for me, and yes there are trigger warnings in this one.
It's a story of suicide, and suicide help-lines that are run by the teens you schooled with. Which broaches the question if people of that age should be helping people? Since it is so traumatic, especially if they succeed in their suicide.
I got all the feels after this short story. That's great writing!
5/5
