Each day is a grand family adventure with the fathers and sons in this lyrical picture book filled with lush illustrations.
A young son and his father trek through trees and listen to birdsong, dig for worms and go fishing, and enjoy the breeze sitting side by side, just like Pop Pop and Daddy did, years ago.
A heartfelt and hopeful tale that touches on grieving the loss of a loved one as a father and son recreate old memories and make new ones in a day-long hiking adventure.
Pierce Freelon is an accomplished musician, producer, and educator from Durham, North Carolina. He is the co-creator of Beat Making Lab, an Emmy Award–winning PBS web series and is the writer, composer and co-director of the PBS animated series The History of White People in America, an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival. His Grammy-nominated children's music has been featured on The Today Show, NPR and MSNBC, as well as in Rolling Stone.
Author Pierce Freelon is joy in human form and has spent a large chunk of his adult life working with or creating works for kids, whether through his children’s music, mentoring youth in storytelling, or creating the animated series called History of White People in America for PBS. The son of a Grammy-nominated Jazz vocalist, Nnenna Freelon, and Philip Freelon, the renowned lead architect of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Pierce comes from a legacy of black movers and shakers.
In speaking about his 2022 Grammy-nomination and making music for kids, he said, “A lot of that music didn’t speak to me culturally.... I decided to be the change I wanted to see and create the sound I wanted to hear for my kids.” In his second picture book, DADDY AND ME, SIDE BY SIDE, Pierce continues to create that sound.
THE ILLUSTRATOR;
Based in Washington, DC, Nadia Fisher is a self-taught artist and illustrator striving to normalize inclusion in children's books and the illustration world. She wants children from all backgrounds to be able to see themselves in the books they read, and she strives to instill a sense of confidence and joy in them as well. When she is not drawing or painting, you can either find Nadia spending time with her husband and daughter or binge watching shows, documentaries, and movies on Netflix. She also loves to get away from the busyness of the city by visiting nearby state parks with her family.
REVIEW:
This was a sweet story of a generational paternal love. The father took the son on a camping trip and the memories they created were to last a lifetime. The boy learns how much his father cares for him by the things he does with him, and how he tries to make his son feel special.
This book may have not had the grandfather in it, per say, but you felt his love was taught and that is how the father is able to lead with such example. You know it will continue if the son has his own children when he is an adult. The lesson of a father-son love is there instilled in them.
A perfect story for the little one in your life to read with their father or grandfather this father's day!
