Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) made her living in the 1970's and 80's profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estee Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. When Lee is no longer able to get published because she has fallen out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Jack (Richard E. Grant). An adaptation of the memoir "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" relays the true story of the best-selling celebrity biographer (and friend to cats).
REVIEW:
I love stories that are based on real events. That's why I chose to watch this film.
I also like Melissa McCarthy, though I wondered how she would do in such a serious role. She played this woman well, and did her justice.
What a story though.
She lied and cheated her way through things to get ahead. Using her talents for things that she shouldn't have. The irony is not lost at the end though.
Bring tissues for one part, oh my word.... thankfully the sad moment does not linger.
As a whole I wasn't floored. Yes it was great acting and a somewhat interesting story. Yet I was still slightly bored. I have a sneaky suspicion that this movie will not be for everyone. Literary lovers, yes, maybe. Others will probably feel boredom and lose interest.
2.5/5

I hadn't heard of this movie until I saw your review here. I am a huge Melissa McCarthy fan so I will definitely see this one.
