Library Of Souls by Ransom Riggs (3)

    • Kindle: 21314 KB
    • Print: 465 pages
    • Publisher: Quirk Books; 1 edition (September 22, 2015)
    • ASIN: B00RKX364M

The New York Times #1 best-selling series. The movie adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is now a major motion picture from visionary director Tim Burton, staring Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Samuel L. Jackson, and Judi Dench.

Like its predecessors, Library of Souls blends thrilling fantasy with never-before-published vintage photography to create a one-of-a-kind reading experience.

A boy with extraordinary powers. An army of deadly monsters. An epic battle for the future of peculiardom.

The adventure that began with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and continued in Hollow City comes to a thrilling conclusion with Library of Souls. As the story opens, sixteen-year-old Jacob discovers a powerful new ability, and soon he’s diving through history to rescue his peculiar companions from a heavily guarded fortress. Accompanying Jacob on his journey are Emma Bloom, a girl with fire at her fingertips, and Addison MacHenry, a dog with a nose for sniffing out lost children.

They’ll travel from modern-day London to the labyrinthine alleys of Devil’s Acre, the most wretched slum in all of Victorian England. It’s a place where the fate of peculiar children everywhere will be decided once and for all.

Ransom Riggs grew up in Florida but now makes his home in the land of peculiar children -- Los Angeles. He was raised on a steady diet of ghost stories and British comedy, which probably explains the novels he writes. There's a nonzero chance he's in your house right now, watching you from underneath the bed. (Go ahead and check. We'll wait.) If not, you can find him on Twitter @ransomriggs.

My review for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
    My review for Hollow City

My review for the film adaption of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

    REVIEW:
    Another awesome look at Peculiars!
Each book in the series picks up more speed than the last, with this book coming to a final conclusion. Ironically, it did leave room open for more, if necessary, but in a whole, the story came together nicely.
How I like to see all the Peculiars make it to where they needed to be and with whom they needed to be with. A happy ending is always nice. I found myself feeling sorry for the creatures that were considered an enemy in this series, after finding out the full history on them. Didn't see that coming, that's for sure!
If you haven't read this series, you should. I saw one person commented that this series is too creepy for her, but that's the thing, there is not much creepy about the story at all. It's like a science-fiction, fantasy, if you ask me, and I think some of you who are turned off would be so on if you gave it a try.

#Win In This Life by Christine Brae (US) With Q&A

After the release of her first two novels, The Light in the Wound and His Wounded Light, Brae never imagined that her words would touch so any people. Her third novel, Insipid, is a standalone that was released in June 2014. She lives in Chicago, with her husband and children.

1.)    What inspired you to write In This Life?
I wrote In This Life at a time when I was searching for answers for the inexplicable things that had   happened to me in the last two years. My books are a reflection of my emotions and feelings at various stages in my life. The stories may or may not be all fiction, but the emotions, thoughts and words are real.
2.)    You’ve written a few other romance novels. What attracts you to this type of genre?
Love is universal. It drives our actions, it rules our lives. I believe in it so much, in its power to redeem and change and form a person. My novels are about strong women and their life’s journeys. It just so happens that love and friendship are such important aspects of a woman’s life.
3.)    Anna is very spiritual. Was there anything that you wanted readers to take away from the story in that aspect?
I certainly did not want to overdo Anna’s spirituality at all! I hope it didn’t come out as the focal point of the book. What I wanted to write about IMPOSSIBLE love and so I had to find a situation that depicted just that.
4.)    Who are your favorite writers? Do you draw any of your inspiration from them or their novels?
Oh my gosh! I could go on and on about my favorite writers, I have so many! My personal stories inspire me, so I don’t really draw my ideas or inspiration from other writers. What I do draw from them is their creativity, their passion for this sometimes thankless art. There are certain authors whose writing styles I adore. They are the ones I strive to emulate. There are many wonderful Indie Authors out there – people know who my favorites are. But I do love the more traditional authors like Anita Shreve, Alice Hoffman, Paul Coelho.
It was really a challenge to embody these characters with that one lesson.
5.)    Do you have any good book recommendations?
Yes! I have so many, I don’t know where to begin. So let’s just look at the latest ones I’ve read.
First, I am currently reading Mists of the Serengeti by Leylah Attar.

My all-time favorite book is Hausfrau by Jill Essbaum.  There’s Adultery by Paul Coelho. And Tarryn Fisher just released her latest masterpiece, Bad Mommy.  Colleen Hoover’s Hopeless is another favorite. I could go on and on, but I think I’ll leave you with those five.

In This Life follows the story of Anna Dillon, who wants to escape her busy life in New York City before she starts medical school in the spring. She ends up volunteering on a medical mission in Thailand with her best friend, Dante. There she meets the passionate and enigmatic Jude Grayson. They’re immediately drawn to him and they share a brief, but fervent affair.
Then Anna has to rush home for a medical emergency, and Jude promises that he’ll stay in touch. But he doesn’t, and Anna tries desperately to move on.

Five years later, and she’s married Dante, after giving up hope that Jude will ever return. And then one day, in a chance meeting, they come face to face again. Anna then she learns the life-altering secret of why Jude never called, and why they can’t be together. But passion that ignited on that Thai beach never died, and it becomes impossible for them to stay apart.

Telling The Truthiness by Richard Braaksma (2)

    • Paperback: 212 pages
    • Publisher: Chapter Eight Press; 1 edition (December 4, 2014)
    • ISBN: 9780993973307

Comedian Stephen Colbert seized his place in the pop-culture imagination as an over-the-top fake news pundit and anchor of the hit show The Colbert Report. Achieving record ratings and a massive fan base, the show has been a vehicle for Colbert to become a larger than life personality and household name. His sweeping satire, political bent, religious views, and cultural critique have led people to call him everything from “comedic genius” to “ideological fanatic.”
Good comedy is about more than just getting laughs. Good comedy tells the truth, reveals that the Emperor has no clothes, and shines light into the dark corners of our world. While Stephen Colbert is no stranger to trivial silliness, his overall comedic voice is deep and profound. This voice – honed over hundreds of episodes, public appearances, and public stunts – is fundamentally concerned with telling the truth. Truth by satire. Truth by telling lies. Telling The Truthiness.
As Stephen Colbert begins a new chapter as successor to David Letterman on The Late Show, the chapters of Telling the Truthiness explore theologically the greatest and longest sustained satire in television history – Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report.
Telling the Truthiness is not a biography of Stephen Colbert. Nor is it a mere highlighting of religious moments on the show that confirm Colbert’s Catholic convictions or religious sensibilities. Telling the Truthiness is an analysis and celebration of the art of Stephen Colbert as prophetic truth-telling.

Richard Braaksma currently serves as the pastor of Hillside Community Church in Calgary, Canada. Richard holds a Masters of Divinity degree from Regent College in Vancouver. Over the last 15 years, Richard has worked as a church planter in Venice, California, a writer, coffeehouse owner, professional blackjack player, and public speaker. Richard has a passion for life, adventure, and laughter which is also the ethos of Telling the Truthiness.

    REVIEW:
    Meh.
I was stoked when I won this book, I thought it would be cool to read a biography on Colbert. Well, it wasn't. At least, not this one.
This book is basically the author connecting whatever dots he can between Colbert's comedy, on or off the shows, and the Bible.
I read my Bible every day. Love having a moment with God each morning. That's not why I wanted this book though. I wanted to laugh, not be taught more Bible study from some one else's perspective. Even that was lacking for me.
Not getting any accolades here. Sorry.

My review for the book, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
My review for the book, Hollow City

    REVIEW:
    LOVE!
The hubby and I have both read the book. I also read Hollow City, the second book, so I have a great understanding for what the film should be about.
I said after reading Miss Peregrine's that Tim Burton would be the guy to make this book come alive, and I was right! He did such a great job at creating what I had in mind for the film version of the story. The kids were so well cast, they literally blew me away. I wasn't a fan of the actress that played Miss Peregrine, but that is because, in my mind, Miss Peregrine was much older than her. Still, she played her well.
I did think a couple of the scenes ended rather abruptly... and even the hubby was like, "What the hay?!"
The film was a great adaption though, blending both the first and second book in the series. If you read the book, or books, then you will enjoy the movie. If you haven't, you may find it too peculiar for you. I suggest reading the book. Even if you think you won't like it. I love when people are surprised.... Then watch the movie.

    REVIEW:
    Bring tissues.
You will definitely need them for the end of the book.
The story hit me like a Mack truck. BAM!
I laughed while reading. I got irritated by certain people and their behavior, and I cried like a baby. This story really took me on a ride.
Nicholas Sparks sure knows how to capture a reader and keep them engaged. It may have taken me a little too long to get through, but that is because life got in the way. If I had all the time in the world, I would've read it in one day.
I can't wait to read more of his stories. I want that emotional experience again and again.
Fans, you won't be disappointed in this one.
If you haven't read anything by Sparks, do so, and even start with this one.
