Improvisation at Page 156

Here's the really good part. Commercial paper is largely made up of bleached wood pulp. The bleach is what makes the paper a nice bright white. Alice replaced my ink cartridge with one that contained highly concentrated ammonia--the same grade they use for pesticide production and sewage treatment. The ammonia was mixed with actual ink and a chemical agent designed to mask its horrific pungent odor. And the paperwork itself has been treated to an even higher concentration of bleach. Thus, when I started filling it out, the ammonia-laced ink came in contact with the chlorine in the heavily bleached paper and produced highly toxic chloramine gas.

Prologue

Federal Bureau of Investigation--National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC), Quantico, Virginia, Present day

This is the first day of the rest of your life, I think to myself as I squint under the bright fluorescent lights in a windowless interrogation room. In the reflection of the yellowy two-way mirror, I look like a bug in a jar, quietly waiting for a mentally disturbed five-year-old to fill it with water and watch me stiffly gallop to a slow and painful death. But my executioner doesn't come in the form of a bored suburban brat. He comes in the form of Assistant Director Winston Fletcher--a fifty-something FBI poster boy with a scrubbed red face (Ivory soap), machine-precision haircut (Floyd the barber), cheap, ill-fitting suit and prep school knock-off tie (Joseph A. Bank), and high-polish wing tips with skid-proof rubber soles (Florsheim).

  2. Wow, that's a very thorough description. I take it he's not fond of the Assistant Director? Sounds like a good read.

  3. I can't tell from the quotes if the narrator is good or bad. Is he tying to pollute the room with the chlorine?

  7. Hi - I looooove this beginning. From the cover, I thought this might be something I'd like to read. The beginning pulled me right in. Only thing - I have trouble imagining someone 'sprinting' within the confines of an interrogation room. :)

  12. Interesting! I wonder if that would really work? I'm finishing up an urban fantasy series this week with Total Eclipse by Rachel Caine. Happy reading!

  13. Clever and unusual way to produce a poisonous gas. I've never seen that before.
I like that descriptive opening. However, my first writing instructor would never let me get away with writing "think to myself." That's redundant. Who else would you think to?
