Improvisation at Page 156
Here's the really good part. Commercial paper is largely made up of bleached wood pulp. The bleach is what makes the paper a nice bright white. Alice replaced my ink cartridge with one that contained highly concentrated ammonia--the same grade they use for pesticide production and sewage treatment. The ammonia was mixed with actual ink and a chemical agent designed to mask its horrific pungent odor. And the paperwork itself has been treated to an even higher concentration of bleach. Thus, when I started filling it out, the ammonia-laced ink came in contact with the chlorine in the heavily bleached paper and produced highly toxic chloramine gas.

Prologue
Federal Bureau of Investigation--National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC), Quantico, Virginia, Present day
This is the first day of the rest of your life, I think to myself as I squint under the bright fluorescent lights in a windowless interrogation room. In the reflection of the yellowy two-way mirror, I look like a bug in a jar, quietly waiting for a mentally disturbed five-year-old to fill it with water and watch me stiffly gallop to a slow and painful death. But my executioner doesn't come in the form of a bored suburban brat. He comes in the form of Assistant Director Winston Fletcher--a fifty-something FBI poster boy with a scrubbed red face (Ivory soap), machine-precision haircut (Floyd the barber), cheap, ill-fitting suit and prep school knock-off tie (Joseph A. Bank), and high-polish wing tips with skid-proof rubber soles (Florsheim).

Great excerpts! Thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed The Intern's Handbook! Hope you're enjoying this one!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a very thorough description. I take it he's not fond of the Assistant Director? Sounds like a good read.
ReplyDeleteI can't tell from the quotes if the narrator is good or bad. Is he tying to pollute the room with the chlorine?
ReplyDeleteMy Friday Quotes
Oh swell .... now I have to find and read BOTH of these before seeing the movie! Thanks, Freda. I owe you one. ;)
ReplyDeleteWell that is definitely one hell of a teaser! That's also a ridiculous amount of effort to go through in an attempt to kill someone! I definitely want to find out more! Thanks for hosting :) I hope you have a great weekend!

Hi - I looooove this beginning. From the cover, I thought this might be something I'd like to read. The beginning pulled me right in. Only thing - I have trouble imagining someone 'sprinting' within the confines of an interrogation room. :)

Wow, FBI adrenaline job! Love the detailed excitement in the snippets you've shared. Thanks for hosting and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteUh oh. That can't be good!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really interesting. I especially like the 56. Who knew printer paper could be a weapon!
ReplyDeleteLove the way the gun is made up of office supplies.
ReplyDeleteHi Freda,
ReplyDeleteSounds like a really good book. I'll have to
check this one out. Have a great day!
Interesting! I wonder if that would really work? I'm finishing up an urban fantasy series this week with Total Eclipse by Rachel Caine. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteClever and unusual way to produce a poisonous gas. I've never seen that before.
ReplyDeleteI like that descriptive opening. However, my first writing instructor would never let me get away with writing "think to myself." That's redundant. Who else would you think to?
Enjoyed reading the prologue. My husband had a real Floyd the barber growing up!
ReplyDeleteSounds quirky--in a good way.
ReplyDeleteinteresting teaser and cover
ReplyDeleteNow THAT is interesting. Death by papercut? ;P
ReplyDeleteI like the bleached paper and ammonia laced ink. I like books with creative characters. Thanks for stopping by Girl Who Reads
