#68: The Rule of Thirds - Chantel Guertin

ixteen-year-old Pippa Greene never goes anywhere without her camera. She and her best friend/supermodel-in-training Dace long ago mapped out their life plan: Pippa will be the noted fashion photographer, and Dace the cover girl. But ever since last spring, things have changed for Pippa — and her junior year at Spalding High proves to have its own set of challenges. Not only is Vantage Point, the statewide photography competition, in three short weeks, but her mandatory volunteer placement lands her at St. Christopher’s Hospital, a place Pippa never wanted to set foot in again. With humour and pluck, she navigates her new role as a candy striper (watch out for Code Yellows), her changing relationship with her best friend (goodbye Honesty Pact), and — perhaps most stressful of all — her new love interests (yes, love interests plural).

Will Pippa make it to Vantage Point without having a panic attack? Will either one of the guys prove less sketchy than her last boyfriend? Can she and Dace figure out a way to dream big and be best friends? One thing is certain: real life is a lot more complicated than a photograph.

My review for Stuck In Downward Dog

REVIEW:
A story of friendship.
There was a lot more to the story than that, like love and loss. Things we all experience in life. There was a couple of extra cool things too, but you have to read the story to find out what they are.
I like Pippa Greene. A lot. She has a pretty good head on her shoulders. Not that she's perfect, far from it, but she is a well-developed and complex character. This story was a great start to the series. I hope in the next book, Ben gets what's coming to him. The one thing I hate more than a liar, is a thief. I look forward to reading about what comes to him.

#67: The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler

From the bestselling author of Twenty Boy Summer, a talented singer loses her ability to speak after a tragic accident, leading her to a postcard-perfect seaside town to find romance.

The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom—until a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak.

Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyse’s home in the Caribbean isn’t: an ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pry—except for one.

Christian Kane is a notorious playboy—insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother, Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life.

When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though—swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy who’s best known for breaking them.

REVIEW:
What a story!
I'm still swooning at the knees. Christian and Elyse couldn't be more perfect for each other. He brings her out of her shell, and she shows him to stand up for himself. Both actions are what count in the story.
Sebastian, the little sweetie pie, steals the scenes for me though. What Elyse helps him do is insoiring, especially with the world the way it is today. Elyse goes through a lot in this story. You, as a reader, go through it with her. In the end, she finds her true voice. Let me tell you, nothing sounds sweeter either.
If you haven't read this story, do so. So many of you will love it like I did. I'm left hoping for more. What happens after the cove? Yup, I wanna know. I bet, you would wanna know too, so get reading!

Hurricane Katrina: 10 Years Later

I can't believe it has been ten years since the devastation that was Hurricane Katrina. I may not be American, but I was glued to the coverage of CNN, praying and hoping, just like everyone else.

Since that day, some people have rebuilt or relocated. Honestly, I don't know what I would do if in that situation. It helps knowing that people and companies step out and come forth to lend a helping hand.

In 2005, Johnson Controls and Tulane University have stood together to help rebuild and even managed to resume classes within five months of the storm. I know that sounds like no time at all, but that is what is amazing! Johnson Controls is still proud to help the Tulane City Center, which is a non-profit organization founded by the Tulane School of Agriculture, rebuild and rejuvenate the community. New Orleans residents, with the help of the university and Johnson Controls, are building a better future one project at a time.
Each year, the Tulane City Center reviews and decides on new project designs. Imagine how much time, money and resources has been put into each of these projects. Now, in the sixth year of Johnson Controls' annual donation, The Tulane City Center has successfully started more than 80 projects for New Orleans residents including; Grow Dat Youth Farm.

Grow Dat Youth Farm is an urban garden for local residents that teaches young people valuable life skills. It has also produced more than 10,000 pounds of healthy food each year. These projects help residents sustain life.

This initiative is only one example of the great things fulfilled by Johnson controls and Tulane City Center. It shows us why the initiative is so important.

“Tulane needed help then, and New Orleans continues to need help today. We proudly have committed $1 million to help revitalize the community with projects that advance the lives of Louisiana residents and their families,” says Bill Jackson, president, Building Efficiency, Johnson Controls.

This $1 million commitment will help the Tulane University and the residents of New Orleans move forward. Which ten years later, help is still very much needed and appreciated.

Are you ready if disaster strikes? Be prepared.

Remember the domino-effect on operations - Consider the accumulated risks that result from “falling dominoes” in emergency situations. Develop a hazard assessment plan with a buildings expert to understand what may occur if a process fails and how to remedy a subsequent problem.

Audit infrastructure now and avoid future risk - Work with a buildings partner to assess your building or campus-wide infrastructure. Ensure IT and various system integrations have the necessary redundancies designed into your buildings. Also consider developing a supply stockpile that may be needed during a severe weather event.

Assess your notification process - During a weather or safety emergency, far too many institutions learn too late that their notification processes are outdated or unsuccessful. If your organization serves multiple building occupants, such as a college or large commercial building, consult with building experts to audit your mass notification technologies and resources. Educate your in-house emergency response teams on the latest compliance standards, especially as it relates to building evacuation process and protocol.

Contact information is critical - When severe weather hits you may not have access to your online contact directories or cell phone service. Understand, in advance, how you can reach a building expert for rental services, such as emergency generators, chillers and packaged equipment.

Improvisation at Page 156

Here's the really good part. Commercial paper is largely made up of bleached wood pulp. The bleach is what makes the paper a nice bright white. Alice replaced my ink cartridge with one that contained highly concentrated ammonia--the same grade they use for pesticide production and sewage treatment. The ammonia was mixed with actual ink and a chemical agent designed to mask its horrific pungent odor. And the paperwork itself has been treated to an even higher concentration of bleach. Thus, when I started filling it out, the ammonia-laced ink came in contact with the chlorine in the heavily bleached paper and produced highly toxic chloramine gas.

Prologue

Federal Bureau of Investigation--National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC), Quantico, Virginia, Present day

This is the first day of the rest of your life, I think to myself as I squint under the bright fluorescent lights in a windowless interrogation room. In the reflection of the yellowy two-way mirror, I look like a bug in a jar, quietly waiting for a mentally disturbed five-year-old to fill it with water and watch me stiffly gallop to a slow and painful death. But my executioner doesn't come in the form of a bored suburban brat. He comes in the form of Assistant Director Winston Fletcher--a fifty-something FBI poster boy with a scrubbed red face (Ivory soap), machine-precision haircut (Floyd the barber), cheap, ill-fitting suit and prep school knock-off tie (Joseph A. Bank), and high-polish wing tips with skid-proof rubber soles (Florsheim).

Symphonized NRG Premium Wood In-Ear Noise-Isolating Earbuds

Listening to music is an everyday occurrence for me, so having great headphones is a must! Every one is different and likes different headphones. While I prefer in-ear earbuds, my hubby prefers over-the-ear headphones. Until Symphonized came along.

Symphonized sent me these NRG Premium Genuine Wood In-Ear Noise-Isolating Earbuds for review.

Let me start off by saying that I have already purchased a second pair for the hubby, but more of that to come in a minute.

If you take a peek at my Barbie Rock n' Royals post, you will see I have a family of music lovers. We not only listen, we play! Any musician can tell you the importance of wood in musical instruments, so naturally, you would be inclined to use headphones that are wooden.

The sound is just so much more sharp and clear, and yes, it cancels all the noise outside. Listening to music with these in my ear were a dream! The sound was so clean. Much more so than regular earbuds. It has a long cord too. Which is another feature I love. Instead of the regular cords that are fragile wires, these are actually corded to protect. They help with not getting so badly tangled too. Also included was different sizes for the ear insert. I use the smallest ones, but it came with medium ones on. You just pop them bad boys off and adjust to your ear. Easy-peasy!

Now back to the hubby...
I liked these earbuds so much, I made the hubby check them out. He listened for a fraction of a minute and then asked me to buy him a pair. The exact same. So I did. They should be here next week.

Here are the specs;

  • Symphonized in-ear noise cancelling headphones are handcrafted from real wood
  • The earphones have crisp powerful sound and strong deep bass
  • Three sizes (S/M/L) of custom comfortable silicone ear tips and one eco-friendly convenient carrying pouch come with our earbuds
  • Answer or end calls, activate Voice Control, skip tracks with a smart built-in in-line microphone. The headphones also have a sleek tangle-free nylon cord that comes in different colors
  • With the stylish design and high-end sound quality, Symphonized earphones are designed for the latest generations of iPod, iPhone, and iPad. They work with all Androids, tablets, mp3 players, and related devices.

Get a pair. They're a decent price, and fantastic quality, you probably won't need headphones again for some time.

#66: Advice For Italian Boys by Anne Giardini

Nicolo’s older and younger brothers seem to have their lives in focus. Nicolo works hard, saves his money, respects his parents and his nonna, but he is still living at home in his early 20s, his life as unformed as gelato. If only he knew which direction to take. His father wants him to study. His mother hints that he should to start a family of his own. Nonna’s advice is emphatic but mysterious.
Filomena Pavone, Nonna to her family, watches over and advises her grandsons by day, and dreams by night of her youth in the southern Italian village of Arduino—its dusty narrow streets, its fragrant flowers, her first forbidden kisses. No one knows or remembers this other Filomena, and her surrendered life of passion and love. But her spirit still glows inside her like banked coals.
Beloved by readers and critics alike, Advice for Italian Boys resonates and surprises. Anne Giardini reveals how life’s most intense moments arise unexpectedly, and how, like Nicolo, we must glean the advice we need to live our lives from wellintentioned but often misguided friends, family and strangers.

REVIEW:
Meh.
Most of this book, I wasn't feeling at all. It was just a story to me, until we got to Zoe's part about 200 pages in, and I was interested in something.
Don't get me wrong, it has the most beautiful, descriptive writing. It's just that the story doesn't really go anywhere. These characters live, eat, sleep, work, go to school, love, just like we do. It still didn't work for me though. I felt like the story was missing something.
It kind of sucks that smaller character had a bigger impact on me than the main character of the book's focus.
I did like the 'old country' proverbs. Especially with both English and Italian translations for each one. Those alone were worth reading the story for. Each one was quite deep and thought-provoking.
So while this wasn't my cup of espresso, it may be more to your tastes. It's one of those cases where you can't knock it till you try it.

REVIEW:
Creeptastic!
This story had some spooky moments. A lot of intriguing moments too, where you had to keep turning the page to find out what happens. Very fast-paced.
Not a story premise that I've read before. That in itself was appealing. It helped that this psycho-ghost story lured you in.
I like the author a lot. There's an ease to her writing that has you reading for hours, without realizing how much time has past. You could help up reading a couple of hours and not really know it.
I'd love to know more about these characters too. The story came to a close, I get that, but I think it would be cool if Tess and Jackson embarked on another journey. I'm pretty invested in these characters. Enough so, I don't really want the story to stop.
That's good writing at work.
Fans are in for a treat with this one, and newbies, enjoy!

Barbie Rock n' Royals #BeSuper & #Win

I don't know a little girl that hasn't played with Barbie's. I had them as a young girl myself, but can't believe how far they have come. Which leads me to this; Barbie promoting self-expression through music!

As you see, I have a family of music lovers. My hubby is self-taught, though he has had lessons on the guitar. My son, is also self-taught. With my hubby's extra guidance, he has become a much better player. Although, he taught himself to play, Smoke On The Water, at age 10! Also pictured is myself. Again, I am self-taught but on the drums. I love keeping rhythm, and especially love the sounds the drums make you blends steady beats together.
I truly value teaching children how to play musical instruments when young. In school, in music class, I was a recorder player like most kids. It was probably one of the more easier instruments to play. I hated playing it though and always gravitated toward the piano. Needless to say, while in grade 6, someone actually has me on video tape at school playing, Somewhere Out There, on piano. (Again, self-taught.) When a person, even a child, sets their mind to a task, it can be done. Plus it can be a therapy to some as they get older. Music has helped my hubby, my son, and myself. It lets us create, learn and get away.

I am so happy to be part of the bunch that gets to promote this new and diverse line, Barbie Rock n' Royals. These musically rockin' Barbies are teaching young minds self-expression through music.

Don’t Follow Directions.
You read that right! Many parents encourage their little ones in music through structured music lessons. But for many kids, music lessons can be stressful and monotonous. While following directions and reading music is important for any musician, finding your own beat is just as vital.  Encourage your daughter to break the rules once in a while by singing or playing a musical instrument however she pleases. This will give her the opportunity to fully express herself and have fun while doing it!

Try Making Music Together.
Music is a fun way to empower and express yourself. Making music with your little ones allows you to communicate with each other in a way that words cannot. Music will unlock your feelings, creativity and open the lines of communication. Initiate this with a fun music video singalong in your living room or having a fun family jam session. You never know, you may find that you’re a better singer than you thought!

Bust a Move.
It’s challenging to listen to music without moving to the rhythm! To help get your little ones moving and expressing themselves, try playing a variety of musical styles to inspire them. Dance along with them and encourage them to try new things too. You’ll be surprised where it takes you!
Remember that no matter how your little ones chooses to express themselves through music, we all approach music and the arts from a place of creative self-expression that should be encouraged. When we reinforce that there’s no right way, we can all have fun!

Barbie is having a fantabulous giveaway on their website. Head over to; http://www.barbie.com/en-ca/besuper/rock-n-royals and enter to win a trip to Los Angeles, California for the Barbie Rock n' Royals concert, featuring a surprise musical guest!

Barbie wants to encourage your young one in self-expression with the new Barbie Rock n' Royals DVD.

In this upbeat musical, Barbie stars as Princess Courtney, a modern-day princess whose world is flipped upside down when she switches places with Erika, a famous rock star. The two very different worlds collide when a mistake sends Princess Courtney to Camp Pop and Erika to Camp Royalty. While Princess Courtney and Erika learn to adapt to their different camps, they must come together when they find out both camps are at risk of shutting down. Through this process, they find their true voices, and come together for an epic sing-off that shows anything is possible!

Celebrating that release, Barbie is offering readers a prize pack containing two dolls and two tickets to a screening in select cities. (ARV $60).
