February Monthly News

Welcome to the February edition of monthly news!
I hope you had a great month!
We've been bearing the extreme cold and snow, which seems to have finally stopped. Thank you, God, Mother Nature, or whomever it may concern. Spring can be sprung anytime now...
Had a couple of deaths in my family this month. My cousin passed away a few months after having heart surgery. He was only 52. My Opa also finally succumbed to Prostate Cancer. He was 73. It has been a tough month for such a short one. Reminds me to hug the family tighter that I have left and I hope you will do the same.
I did manage to read a bit though.... How are you coming along on your reading challenges? I'm ahead of pace according to Goodreads. :-)

Everyday Elegance with eShakti

Let me introduce you to the new love of my life. eShakti. Their tagline should be, 'Dress by Design'. Maybe that's taken, I don't know, but it sounds fitting.
eShakti takes beautifully tailored dresses to a whole new level.
You go on to their site, and browse for hours because you will want everything, when you feast your eyes on the perfect little number.
After deciding that bad boy is yours, you get taken to the measurement page. If you are lucky, like me, to be the same measurements for the last twenty years or so, you will know your measurements. If you're extra lucky, again, like me, you will be able to choose one of the pre-recommended sizes for average ladies. If not, and your frustrated for having to get a dress that fits up top but too long, or is just long enough but doesn't fit up top, you are able to record your exact measurements and the dress will be tailored to fit your beautiful figure.
LOVE THIS!
I am a tall girl, but small up top, it is hard to get the exact proportions for my frame, but eShakti customizes it to what you need. I was still lucky their size medium, 10, was an exact fit. Don't let that number of mine scare you. In Canada, my jeans are a size 7. It's just a number. Go by the measurements.
When you complete your order, they email you the best receipt ever!
Now that is service!
My dress arrived and it was like Christmas morning. Opening that box, I was filled with emotions. eShakti surprised my expectations and more!
Wearing the dress, which has hidden pockets, makes me feel like a princess. I felt an everyday elegance. Like I could wear this beautiful black number anywhere. It also fit like a glove, and I felt love.

I can't wait to go shopping and buy another beautiful number. I urge you to check them out and see what you could add to brighten your wardrobe up. Ladies, you will feel like a million bucks in their dresses, I guarantee it!

The sun was setting, the citizens of St. Deborah by the Water gathering for the performance. Far fewer of them now than there had been, no more than thirty in two grim-faced rows on the grit of the former parking lot. A wolfish grey dog lay on its side at the end of the front row, its tongue lolling. The girl who followed Kirsten was nowhere in sight.

Book Beginnings

The king stood in a pool of blue light, unmoored. This was act 4 of King Lear, a winter night at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto. Earlier in the evening, three little girls had played a clapping game onstage as the audience entered, childhood versions of Lear's daughters, and now they'd returned as hallucinations in the mad scene. The king stumbled and reached for them as they flitted here and there in the shadows. His name was Arthur Leander. He was fifty-one years old and there were flowers in his hair.

REVIEW:
Lovely illustrations!
In the format of a middle grade book, this fairytale for adults takes you on a journey you won't expect.
The story was fun and I liked the unexpected twist. Martek is my favorite character, so strong and smart he is.
Martek and Marianna are so sweet. It was their story I wanted to read about.
The 'Good VS Evil' thing was just okay for me. Often I thought the story got out of sorts during those parts. Two focal points in one story when all I wanted was the romance.
Not the best fairytale I have ever read, but certainly not the worst either.

Freda's Voice is happy to be part of the book blast tour for, The Third Twin. Be sure to read on to the end for a great giveaway! Good luck!

third TwinThe Third Twin by C.J. Omololu

When they were little, Lexi and her identical twin, Ava, made up a third sister, Alicia. If something broke? Alicia did it. Cookies got eaten? Alicia’s guilty. Alicia was always to blame for everything.

The game is all grown up now that the girls are seniors. They use Alicia as their cover to go out with boys who are hot but not exactly dating material. Boys they’d never, ever be with in real life.

Now one of the guys Alicia went out with has turned up dead, and Lexi wants to stop the game for good. As coincidences start piling up, Ava insists that if they follow the rules for being Alicia, everything will be fine. But when another boy is killed, the DNA evidence and surveillance photos point to only one suspect—Alicia. The girl who doesn’t exist.

As she runs from the cops, Lexi has to find the truth before another boy is murdered. Because either Ava is a killer . . . or Alicia is real.

#16: The Intern's Handbook - Shane Kuhn

John Lago, an intern at one of the biggest law firms in Manhattan. He clocks eighty hours a week getting coffee, answering phones, and doing all of the grunt work no one else wants to do…and he doesn’t make a dime. But John isn’t trying to claw his way to the top of the corporate food chain. He was hired to assassinate one of the firm’s high profile, heavily guarded partners. His internship is the perfect cover—he can gather intel and secure the access he needs to execute a clean, untraceable kill.

The Intern’s Handbook begins as an unofficial survival guide for new recruits at Human Resources, Inc.—a front for one of the most elite assassin training and “placement” programs in the world—and becomes a chronicle of John’s final assignment, a twisted, violent thrill ride in which he is pitted against the strongest (and sexiest) adversary he has ever faced: Alice, a federal agent assigned to investigate the same law firm partner John’s been hired to kill.

My review for Casual Friday (which is still FREE!)

REVIEW:
I can't wait to see the film adaption!
What an incredible story! There was a feeling of six degrees of separation throughout, but it totally worked! The story was full of action, lots of comedic moments, and mixed it all up with this intricately told tale. I just couldn't get enough of it!
The idea of an intern being an assassin is unheard of, so being a fresh and new premise made for an even more exciting read.
I do have to say that I am not sure how to feel about the ending, which you know endings mean a lot to me. I think everyone should have got what was coming to them, but can still see why the author went the direction that he did. It just wasn't convincing to me.
I still think it is a wicked story and highly recommend it to you all!

REVIEW:
What an ending!
I just finished the book and am blubbering like a baby. Strange, since the story is scary as heck! The ending though, was anything but scary.
Skylar is an amazing girl, even if naive. Her naivety is sweet though in a very endearing way. She has the best intentions. She is still a force to reckon with in this tale.
Boy-oh-boy though, the villains in this one are terrifying! Especially Gavin. He's the kind of scary that keeps you up at night.
Definitely true to Chevy's writing, the story pulls you in and paints the most terrifyingly vivid picture. I love that though! She is definitely a master storyteller in the thriller department. I have read all of her books, I guess you can say I am a super fan. She is simply my favorite Canadian author. Why? Because her stories scare the shit out of me, and I like that.
If you haven't read any of her books, I urge you to do so.

REVIEW:
Here is the one person that didn't like it.
It's me. I just didn't enjoy it or get it, frankly. I also don't get how this film stole all the awards' nominations at the Oscars. I get it was a sophisticated story, but maybe too sophisticated for me. I felt the degrees of separation were just too far for my tastes. It was so hard to decipher what was real and what was fantasy. Was he crazy, suicidal or both? I feel like I will never know.
In the end, I feel like this is two hours of my life I can't get back.

I glanced back where the guys had gone into the bushes, saw them walking out.
"You think they're okay?" I whispered.
Dani turned and looked at them. "Yeah, they're just typical boys hoping to get lucky. If they want to be nice, fine, but we don't have to do anything else."

#14: Sweet Water - Christina Baker Kline

When a grandfather she never knew bequeaths her a house and 60 acres of land in Sweetwater, Tenn., a restless young artist leaves New York to recover her past and rethink her future. Cassie Simon's mother Ellen died when Cassie was only three; raised in Boston by her grieving father, she never knew her maternal relatives. Unprepared for the thick veil of mystery that surrounds them, Cassie is especially bewildered by her brusque grandmother, whom rumor credits with hiding a terrible secret about Ellen's death. In alternating sections told from their respective points of view, Cassie and her grandmother fight their separate battles to cope with the truth about the tragedy. Kline perfectly renders each woman's voice: Cassie's, probing and often uncertain, propels the narrative and creates an appropriate level of psychological suspense; the grandmother's quavers with the weight of memory as Cassie's search forces her beyond family myth to a painful and perhaps dangerous truth. The result is a powerful, immensely readable tale of loyalty and betrayal, family and memory, made fresh by Kline's often beautiful and always lucid prose.

Dodge Foundation Fellowship and several research fellowships, and has been a Writer-in-Residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Kline lives with husband and three sons in Montclair, New Jersey. She is at work on another novel and an anthology.

REVIEW:
A page turner!
What a wonderful debut novel, not what I expected at all. Usually contemporary stories are not as suspenseful as this one is. For my introduction to this author, I am thoroughly impressed! The flow of the story is told from two points of view. One is current and one is more of a vignette. I love how they came together and meshed well at the end.
The story itself was amazing. Having family drama is a part of life often, and this story was another brilliant look at family dynamics and secrets.
Lots of people will definitely love the writing and I highly recommend it if you haven't read it already.

#13: Fairest - Marissa Meyer

Mirror, mirror, on the wall.
Who is the Fairest of them all?

Pure evil has a name, hides behind a mask of deceit, and uses her "glamour" to gain power. But who is Queen Levana? Long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress in The Lunar Chronicles, Levana lived a very different story—a story that has never been told . . . until now. New York Times –bestselling author Marissa Meyer reveals the story behind her fascinating villain in Fairest, an unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes a special full-color image of Levana’s castle and an excerpt from Winter, the exciting conclusion to The Lunar Chronicles.

REVIEW:
I can't believe I was choked up at the end!
While this wasn't my favorite of The Lunar Chronicles in the series, I still liked it. This book basically shows you why Levana, the Queen of Lunar, is the way she is and the trials she went through that made her that way. Though, in hindsight, she really put herself in those situations. She is her own worst enemy, as they say, but it made for great reading. You learn so much about Levana in this story, more than you thought you ever would.
I can't wait to see her step-daughter's point of view in the next book, Winter. I bet she can shed even more light on Levana too.
I still think this series should be on tv or in films. It is so epic, why isn't it done already?!
