2014 Mount TBR March Checkpoint

HOST

Okay, I do this challenge every year. In the beginning, I completed it no problem. The last couple years though have been an issue.
You can see my challenge for this year over here.
I am doing better than last year though. I don't think I had any books read for the challenge at this point. This year I have one. Yup, you read that right. ONE.
Seeing as how I am trekking up Mount Vancouver, I need to get it together. I have at least 35 more to go!

The one book I completed is by Tricia Goyer.
It was awesome, check my review out here. In this book you learn how to put Amish teachings into your daily life. Even if it's when you have your moment with God, who happens to be the only person in the book worth mentioning.  :-)

So there is my checkpoint. Hopefully the next checkpoint I will be up the hill a little more.

Blasting About: Fortune Cookie (With #Giveaway)

Fortune Cookie
Fortune Cookie
Sadie Hoffmiller has always liked things to be just so. A place for everything and everything in its place. Order over chaos. And of all things Sadie should be able to control, her own wedding is at the top of the list.

With the big day just three weeks away, Sadie is busily adding the final touches to her wedding plans but the arrival of a mysterious letter from San Francisco changes everything. The only person Sadie knows in San Francisco is her older sister, Wendy, whom she hasn’t seen since their mother’s funeral nearly fifteen years ago.

Sadie has faced off against murderers and criminals in recent years, yet the possibility of reconnecting with her sister is both overwhelming and frightening. Sadie soon discovers, however, that the letter is just the beginning when Wendy’s world turns out to be a place of unanswered questions, twisted truths, and more than one person with a motive for murder.

The more Sadie digs into her sister’s past, the more she places her own future at risk.

Josi
Author Josi S. Kilpack

Josi S. Kilpack hated to read until her mother handed her a copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pond when she was 13. From that day forward, she read everything she could get her hands on and accredits her writing “education” to the many novels she has “studied” since then. She began writing her first novel in 1998 and never stopped. Her novel, Sheep’s Clothing won the Whitney Award 2007 for Mystery/Suspense. mp3gratiss #Review

mp3gratiss is a music and video search engine website that is based in Indonesia.
You can sign up for a free account, though you do not have to, and listen or watch whatever your heart desires. Having an account would be beneficial though for saving favorites and keeping track of what you watch.
While watching the videos, if you scroll to the bottom of the page, there is some handy music suggestions relating to the videos you have been listening to at that time.
I did a search for one of Iggy Azalea's tracks, My World. It listed every source available. There were versions I had not heard before, which was cool. You can even download the mp3 for free. No strings whatsoever, and you don't need to be signed in to get it either. That's the coolest part.
Now, at the top of the site, on the home page, I noticed all these 'TV' buttons. I decided to click on SCTV.
I thought of the one I watched as a kid, with John Candy and the boys, but had a feeling this would be different.
I was right. It is a live stream of an Indonesian channel. It had commercials that seemed to go on forever, just like we do over here, even a Tresemmé commercial came on! I got watching for a bit, even though I didn't understand a word... funny how that is.
The still shown is an ad for an ice-cream-thingy that looked pretty yummy. Anyway, the point is, there is hours of fun and entertainment to be had on mp3gratiss. No matter what you are looking for, I am sure you will find it.

Yet even as Marianna said those words, Rebecca could see it was more than that. She'd known Marianna enough years to know that when her eyebrows pushed together and the skin folded on her forehead, something was wrong. She also saw from Marianna's tight-lipped gaze that she wasn't going to change her mind.

S Is For Songs

I'm so glad that Spring has sprung and sledding season is over.
At least in my nook of the world anyway.
Other parts of Canada are not so lucky. This is why I'm thankful to have the Lake Effect and miss most of the crappy stuff... a.k.a. the snow.
It's rain season now, in fact it's trying to rain now.
But today I had no photos planned to share, so I decided to take the easy way out and share some of my all-time favorite songs with you all.
Enjoy the musical break.

You all know from one of my E posts how much I love Elvis.
This song has tons of meaning for me.
My cousin was killed by a drunk driver in front of my home, which I witnessed, and this song we danced to at his wedding. He was my favorite person because we shared a love of the king. I always think of Billy when I hear it, and it makes me smile.

This is my all-time favorite punk band. Bad Brains.
This song is my all-time favorite punk track.
It's basically a song about how you can be your own worst enemy. It reminds me to be my own friend.

My favorite classic rock band, ever! Led Zeppelin.
I have every album they have made. I love them that much.
This, of course, is my favorite song by them.

So there are just a few of the songs I sing a long too. What are some of your faves?

#22: The Spindlers - Lauren Oliver

Evocative of Alice in Wonderland, this novel from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver is a bewitching story about the reaches of loyalty and the enduring power of hope.
Looking across the breakfast table one morning, twelve-year-old Liza feels dread wash over her. Although her younger brother, Patrick, appears the same, Liza knows that he is actually quite different. She is certain that the spindlers—evil, spiderlike beings—came during the night and stole his soul. And Liza is also certain that she is the only one who can rescue him.
Armed with little more than her wits and a huge talking rat for a guide, Liza descends into the dark and ominous underground to save Patrick's soul. Her quest is far from easy: she must brave tree-snakes, the Court of Stones, and shape-shifting scawgs before facing her greatest challenge in the spindlers' lair, where more than just Patrick's soul is at stake.

REVIEW:
This was a great and imaginative story! So many great creatures and characters woven in this magical world, it was hard to put the book down.
I liked the way Lauren shaped Liza. She was a fearless, smart and highly independent character. The best part is, the end was open enough if Lauren chose to write some more, she could. (I hope she does.) It was something at the end that had my hopes going for more, but I can't share it with you. You have to read it.
Kids 8-12 will love this book. Best part is, some parents, like me, will love this story too. It is a great teaching of not giving up, being brave, and always listening to the good not the bad.
A little gem of a book, and one I am happy is in my collection.

Other books I've reviewed by E. Van Lowe:
My review for The Zombie Always Knocks Twice
My review for Never Slow Dance With A Zombie

AUTHOR BIO:
E. Van Lowe is an author, television writer, screen-writer, playwright and producer who has worked on such TV shows as "The Cosby Show," "Even Stevens," and "Homeboys In Outer Space." He has been nominated for both an Emmy and an Academy Award. His first YA Paranormal novel, "Never Slow Dance With A Zombie," was a selection of The Scholastic Book Club, and a nominee for an American Library Association Award.  His Best Selling novels, "Boyfriend From Hell" and "Earth Angel," are the first two books in the Falling Angels Saga.  "The Zombie Always Knocks Twice" is the first book in his Hollyweird series.
E lives in Beverly Hills California with his spouse, a werewolf, several zombies and a fairy godmother who grants him wishes from time-to-time.

REVIEW:
I love this series!
This final book really brought it all together nicely. Though I am sad to see it done. I read through this book pretty fast, absorbing all that was going on, and I sit here now still taking it in.
The predictability factor was low, which was good. I had an idea sometimes what would happen but then it never quite came out as I expected.
I'm still swooning over Guy, but Orthon and Harrison give him a run for his money too. They show traits that I really loved, and wasn't expecting from either of them.
Megan irked me at times. She's smart, but you know when you watch a horror movie, and the girl goes toward the bad sound.... she had that going on and I was screaming at the book like a madwoman.
That's exceptional writing happening. To invoke that emotion and have me yelling outright at a character in the book, genius! After reading the books I have though, I expect nothing less from E.
I really enjoyed this series as a whole, and think anyone looking for something different, fun and showcasing good vs evil, than give it a go. For those not so sure, give it a go anyway.

R Is For Routine

It rained yesterday and even this morning a little. The skies are still pretty threatening though.
I don't mind the rain. I can still get around and not feel like it holds me back in any way. Snow, on the other hand, is not Freda-friendly. It's depressing, cold, piles so high you can't get around, and just plain sucks.
I'm so glad Spring has finally sprung and pray the snow is done.
It remains to be seen though with all this crazy weather we've been having.
Global warming, yeah okay.... more like global snowing.
Anyway, my R post is not about the rain, though it could be I have lots to say. No today I'm gonna discuss routine.
Okay, maybe not this routine, but routine in general.
I am the kind of girl that lives for routine. I know some people say monotony, but I say routine.
I like knowing that my day is balanced, I know what to do and expect, and have set tasks to do. I prefer to ensure my daily tasks happen at the same time every day, like feeding the dogs, reading my bibles, even cleaning tasks.
Does it make me anally organized? Yes.
Do I like being anally organized? You betcha!
A sense of monotony makes me feel like I know where my day is going. I don't mind the odd wrench thrown in here and there, and yes, I love surprises, but I still demand those daily tasks get done and at that specific time.

So what about you? Do you enjoy routine? Do you have things that you set time for each day or certain days and do not steer away from? What is your routine task(s)?
