August Monthly News

Welcome to the August edition of monthly news!
It's bittersweet, this month. Last month of summer, but yay to the kids going back to school!
Did you do anything this summer you care to share, comment and tell us.
I had family come from Texas, and got to see 54-40 at an outdoor concert, but really that was it. Not a very exciting summer at all. I'll have to live vicariously through you all.

#80: What Really Happened in Peru - Cassandra Clare

Fans of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices know that Magnus Bane is banned from Peru—and now they can find out why. One of ten adventures in The Bane Chronicles.
There are good reasons Peru is off-limits to Magnus Bane. Follow Magnus’s Peruvian escapades as he drags his fellow warlocks Ragnor Fell and Catarina Loss into trouble, learns several instruments (which he plays shockingly), dances (which he does shockingly), and disgraces his host nation by doing something unspeakable to the Nazca Lines.

This standalone e-only short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. This story in The Bane Chronicles, What Really Happened in Peru, is written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan.

My review for City of Bones.

REVIEW:
LOVE Magnus!
I have only read City Of Bones so have had minimal exposure to Magnus. This short story gave me that little extra to let me in as to who he is, as a character.
I can't wait to get back onto the series. I definitely want to know more about this smart, strong, quirky and witty character.

Val Kilmer and Elle Fanning star in this terrifying horror film written and directed by Academy Award Winner Francis Ford Coppola. Kilmer plays Hall Baltimore, a writer on a book tour who uncovers a disturbing murder that could be source material for his next novel. But as Hall investigates the killing, he finds himself confronted by chilling nightmares, including the ghost of a young girl (Fanning). As he uncovers more horrifying revelations, Hall will discover that the story has more to do with his own life than he could ever have imagined.

REVIEW:
Forty minutes into the movie, I was laughing my head off. For a horror film, that is a bad sign. That was also the only time I had any reaction to the film.
It was pretty disappointing. It didn't help I had such high hopes... a Francis Ford Coppola film with Val Kilmer... what could go wrong?! Enough, let me tell you.
It lacked any depth to the story. It had no character and the characters were boring.
Not going on my recommendation list either.

Blasting About: The Silver Strand (With Giveaway)

silver strand
The Silver Strand
Ever since twelve year old Isabelle Tresdon’s silver strand of hair sprouted, it’s been nothing but trouble: bleeding pink dust and sparking like a firecracker. Refusing to be known as the girl with the freaky, grandma hair, she wishes it never grew and the hair withers and tarnishes. The only problem is, the strand is Isabelle's source of magic, and she can transform particles of energy into matter. It's also her ticket into Mastermind Academy, a secret school inside the earth’s core. Five days remain before the strand drains her magic and life, forcing Isabelle to enter into a deal with two trickster Masterminds to save it. But what she doesn't count on is there is more at stake than just her life. The Silver Strand, a MG Fantasy Adventure for 9-12 year olds, is book 1 in the Mastermind Academy Series.

Author L.J. Clarkson
One thing you need to know about LJ Clarkson is that she tells BIG lies. She tells everyone that she gave up her career as an Environmental Engineer and Project Manager to write full time. But that's not entirely true. Ten percent of the time she sleeps in. Fifteen percent of her day, she spends surfing the internet, researching for new books and her business. Ok, fine. Two percent is for research. But she's only admitting it so she doesn't end up like Boldrick. For eighteen point seven five percent of her day, she runs her promotional and support site for authors, called Indicated (www.indicated.com.au). The rest of her time involves writing, reading, watching movies and TV, walking her dogs and falling asleep whenever her boyfriend talks technical computer lingo. Truthfully, she hates early mornings, mondays, grammar (yuck! just ask her poor editor!), broccoli and cleaning. If you would like to drop her and line and let her know what you think of the book, she would love to hear from you. Just not before 8:30am in the morning.

  Excerpt

“Did you know Isabelle has a silver, alien antenna?” Bimouth’s voice sang out over the shouts and chatter of the school bus, capturing everyone’s attention. “In science class, a magnet flew out of Mr. Higgins’ hand and stuck to her antenna. How freaky is that?” Isabelle’s back pressed against her seat. Bianca leapt up like a jack-in-a-box. Her voice came out as a hiss. “Shut your face horse mite or I’ll shut it for you.” Looked like the bus ride might end in death. Bigmouth turned to face Bianca. “What if Isabelle’s antenna, like, turns us into alien zombies?” A chorus of whispers broke out. Catching the bus was a very bad idea. Isabelle prayed again for that black hole to open up and suck her in. Better yet, she wished it would gobble up the bigmouth. Isabelle tugged on Bianca’s arm and said in a low voice, “Just cut it off.” Her friend’s eyes softened. “You sure, Boof?” “The hair’s caused nothing but trouble since it sprouted.” The little voice inside Isabelle’s mind begged her not to, but she didn’t listen. “Ok.” Something in Bianca’s school bag rattled as she riffled through it. She yanked a pair of scissors free. Isabelle’s gut clenched as her friend laid the strand between the blades. “Wait!” She suddenly felt unsure about whether to get rid of it. What if it were special and magical like Bianca had said? A magnetic hair, although cool, was hardly magical. Isabelle decided to test it. Closing her eyes, she willed her strand to turn Bigmouth into a toad. But Bigmouth’s voice still carried throughout the bus. “And in gym class, like, she bled this weird, pink dust.” “Definitely an alien,” someone nearby agreed. So much for Isabelle’s strand being magical. “Cut it,” she said, exchanging a sideways look with Bianca. Her friend squeezed the handles together. Fuchsia-colored sparks shot out and scalded Isabelle’s right cheek. The strand sizzled and hissed like a firecracker, drawing the attention of Bigmouth. She shrieked like a real girl. “Look! Isabelle’s antenna’s on fire.”

Review:
I enjoyed learning each Japanese proverb or saying. It had both Japanese and English translations and even breaks down each word used in the phrase and shows you its meaning. I may not remember them all in Japanese, but remembering them in English is easier for me.
I definitely recommend a book like this one just to give you a glimpse into a different cultures' sayings. It's also a great spiritual pick-me-up!

O Is For Older

Oven is not my choice this week.
I use my oven, but don't feel like showcasing it.
Today I am going to discuss my thoughts on getting older. At least for me.
Yeah, I know it's gonna happen to us all, but now it's happening to me!
When I was in my twenties, I use to think getting older was no big deal. At almost thirty I was still getting carded for I.D. at the liquor store. It was a fabulous feeling!!! Hard to think about getting older as a bad thing when everyone still acts like you're young.
Even thirty was a piece of cake.
I know, it sounds like I'm bragging now... but you ladies know it is gonna come to a crashing halt right?!
And it does!
My dad died when I was 32.
By the time I was 33 I started to really see signs of aging and stress. Lines beginning to crease my forehead that weren't there before. Tons of grey hair, so much so, the dye didn't cover it for long.
Now, pushing forty, I can't walk as far without my buttcheeks hurting for three days afterward. I have tons of lines and grey hairs, and boys and girls, I have hit menopause!
Lucky me!
So now throw in hot flashes and my beyond bitchy self, whaddaya get???

Freda getting older.

God I miss the days of getting carded.......

Taylor Lavati on Twitter

I asked Taylor how did she come about writing this book, and this is what she said:

It's funny but the initial idea sparked from a class I was taking. It was an elective called Great Books. I had chosen to read about Greek Mythology and fell in love with the topic. So I wrote some short stories about it, but never writing a full length novel, I didn't want to try. It was kind of intimidating sitting down and preparing to write a book. So instead I stuck with my short stories and stayed in my comfort zone.

Then I had this crazy dream about a full plot and everything that had to do with Greek Mythology stories but with a new twist on them. I woke up and wrote the dream down and started writing that same day. I wrote this book in about a month since I was so into it and the ideas kept flowing. The plot has stayed the same ever since the dream, just minor parts have changed.

#Giveaway: Darlene - David Russell

The hero, Percival arranges a date through a contact mag. He and Darlene have a rapturous scenario, handled with superb finesse and supreme command of the wardrobe. He finds some hints of her complicated past. Before and after the encounter, he is eyed up and accosted by malicious-seeming men. The sense of an underlying hornet’s nest is scary, and immediately detracts from the euphoria, which does finally prevail.

Excerpt

I envisaged Darlene dressing before her mirror, adoring her own image, caressing her thighs as she drew up her stockings, loving her own image in the mirror, savouring her own fully charged magnetism. I imagined delicious dressing in preparation for delicious undressing – perhaps some feeling in her bones that I might be someone out of the ordinary, or even an additional bonus of doing it with another woman before my eyes.

I, in turn, practiced disrobing in front of my mirror, in subdued light, capturing all the alluring angles, savouring myself under the dream spell of her implicit eyes. I sensed the bleeps of telepathy in operation between us—laser-beamed gazes and breaths of rapture.

I spiced my sensations with my favourite videos. Katy Perry’s Thinking of You and Teenage Dream came to the fore, those graceful balletic of revelation, pulling on the stockings, pulling off the jeans, my hands all over that lithe, tanned form. I washed, ironed, and immersed myself into putting on and taking off all the items in my wardrobe. I even had some limbering up chats on the phone – some alluring voices there, even more magical for their anonymity and their covert location. Those blind rehearsals sharpened the visual and tactile imagination. Some aspects suit complete darkness, others suit subdued light. Maybe at some point, there will be a home video, capturing idyllic trysts indoors and outdoors, two lovers willing themselves into dream perfection…great art is often a substitute or reminder for experience. How much more fulfilling when it is an accompaniment or a backdrop

ABOUT MY PAST DECISIONS HAVE MADE ME WHO I AM TODAY

My Past Decisions Book CoverFor author Doe Running Deer, life has been a series of tragedy and healing. In My Past Decisions Have Made Me Who I Am Today, she narrates the stories of her trials and tribulations, sharing how faith helped her get through the difficult periods. Using personal anecdotes to illustrate how God has worked in her life, she explores the doubts, fears, and perplexities she experienced and describes how she found comfort and guidance in the Bible and through prayer. In this memoir, she recalls growing up as the oldest of four in a small Texas town against the backdrop of her parents’ alcoholism and marital issues; being molested by a cousin at an early age; being introduced to Jesus Christ in her teenage years; marrying an alcoholic; and enduring his subsequent suicide. With scriptural examples to highlight key points, My Past Decisions Have Made Me Who I am Today serves to communicate the message that there is healing and that God is listening and is rescuing his people from their hurts and pains.
