January Monthly News

Happy 2013!!!
My resolution this year is to keep trying to be a better human being. Be more compassionate, patient and loving. Keep learning and listen more.
Good goals for any person to strive for.
I also want to read at least 150 books. I read 137 last year and feel down about that since it's much lower than the previous years. I know it's good by any standards, but I want to read more.
My blogging goals are to comment more often, since I've been slipping, and find more blogs to read. Meaning the newbie blogs. Show support for the newbie, since I used to be one, that's my thinking....
What are your personal and blogging goals, if any?
You'll also notice in the monthly news that I'm keeping track of genres read instead of page count. It's the one true way to see which genre is my favorite or most chosen.

#14: The Bracelet - Roberta Gately (With Giveaway)

(Affiliate link)

Newly heartbroken and searching for purpose in her life, Abby Monroe is determined to make her mark as a UN worker in one of the world’s most unstable cities: Peshawar, Pakistan. But after witnessing the brutal murder of a woman thrown from a building, she is haunted by the memory of an intricate and sparkling bracelet that adorned the victim’s wrist.
At a local women’s shelter, Abby meets former sex slaves who have miraculously escaped their captors. As she gains the girls’ trust and documents their horrifying accounts of unspeakable pain and betrayal, she joins forces with a dashing New York Times reporter who believes he can incriminate the shadowy leader of the vicious human trafficking ring. Inspired by the women’s remarkable bravery—and the mysterious reappearance of the bracelet— the duo traces evidence that spreads from remote villages of South Asia to the most powerful corners of the West, risking their lives to offer a voice to the countless innocents in bondage.

  • Paperback: 336 pages
  • Publisher: Gallery Books; Original edition (November 6, 2012)

Author Bio:
A nurse, humanitarian aid worker, and writer, Roberta Gately has served in war zones ranging from Africa to Afghanistan. She has written extensively on the subject of refugees for the Journal of Emergency Nursing, as well as a series of articles for the BBC Worlds News Online. She speaks regularly on the plight of the world’s refugees and displaced.

Review:
An deeply emotional topic, human trafficking. Yet, it happens every day around the world, even our own backyards, while we are somewhat oblivious.
This book is about a UN worker and a reporter who try to do more. I use the word try very loosely, as its' the most difficult task to take on. Terror, fear, and more bone-chilling feelings are most of what you take out of a situation as that one. Having to find a way to stay safe and get word out about what is happening, reminds me why most of the world keeps quiet about these things. Even if it's so wrong to do so.
It makes for great reading, but what a terrible life!! Though this is fiction, somewhere in the world it is some young girls' reality. That's all I keep thinking about. This book makes me want to help, and do more... just like the UN worker and the reporter.
Any rate, that is also not much of a realistic idea... though nice as it is.
This is one of those books that some will love and others will not.

Silver-White by Shawn Underhill

“The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”
~ Robert Frost

*Evie’s family has been holding out on her …

Big time.

On an unexpected visit to her grandparents’ house in New Hampshire’s secluded North Woods, the sixteen-year-old literally runs into the truth of the long-hidden family secrets, and finds herself thrust without warning into the clandestine world of the Great North Pack—a wild and exhilarating world of rugged beauty, heart-pounding adventures, and long nights running under a sea of stars … but as she’s set to discover, a world also fraught with potential dangers lurking in the shadows.

Praise
"Simply put, this book was amazing. I've read more fantasy novels than than I can count, but this one is certainly one of the best. The heroine isn't some wishy-washy pansy that screams at everything, and the focus of the story isn't on some unbelievably beautiful teenage girl who suddenly becomes the biggest, baddest member of her species falling in love with some big, bad, sexy member of her newfound species. It's about a girl becoming something she never knew existed, finding her place within the pack family she values more than ever before, and an age-old feud that threatens everything she loves." ~Morgan

My review for Home Workout (With DVD)

Review:
I had a keen interest in Pilates. It seems to be the rage at keeping fit at the moment. This book seemed appropriate to teach me the basics of Pilates.
I was right.
This is exactly what every beginner needs to get exercising and keeping fit. It will leave you feeling renewed. Well, that's how I feel after.
Step by step instructions, with proper photos assisting you in your Pilates.
I'm not going to lie to you and tell you it's a piece of cake, it's not! But the end prize of being healthy and fit is worth the tough work to get there.
Anything in life, you get what you put in, and Pilates is no different. If you're a scaredy-cat like me, to go to the class and work out with a bunch of strangers, then this book is perfect for you too!

Czech Glass Nail Files

Mont Bleu is a wholesale Czech glass and crystal nail file distributor.
Each nail file is hand-crafted, and even have Swarovski crystal elements.
An attractive and vast range of nail file sets to choose from, you will find the style and look you love.

Here is my own personal collection:
As you see, not all have adornments on them. Though the decorated nail files are beautiful.
I like the use of them rather than metal nail files. The file evenly and smooth, and in fewer strokes.
They really work better at making sure your nail gets shape instead of scraping the nail off, and getting a jagged look when using metal nail files. I will never use anything else but these Czech glass and crystal nail files again!

I highly recommend you get some too!!!

Review:
Somewhere I read this book was the best in the series so far, and I have to agree. It had the most going on, and yet they story really came around for me. Like all the pieces were finally in place.
Then we get to the end of the book and I realize this is not over, we have one more book to go.
Did it faze me? No. I was wondering when Satan would need to make another appearance and when it didn't happen in this one....
So I look forward to seeing what happens and if Megan can thwart Satan one final time. Gawd, I hope so!!!!

Review:
I remembered the first movie where his daughter is "taken", and though it didn't blow me away, I liked it.
This movie picked right up where that one left off basically.
It wasn't very exciting in the beginning, but it picked up. Lots of guns and blowing things up!!
Liam Neeson plays a bad ass C.I.A. agent that knows some really creative ways of escaping captivity. That alone made the film worth watching. Total genius I tell you.
The bad guys never stop chasing Liam either, so there is room in the end for a third film.

#11: Wintergirls - Laurie Halse Anderson

“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
I am that girl.

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.
In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the multiple-award-winning Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia’s descent into the powerful vortex of anorexia, and her painful path toward recovery.

You can follow her adventures on Twitter, and on her blog.

Review:
This is one of those books that is a really quick read, however, I didn't love the story. Or the writing for that matter. A entire two pages of, "MUST.NOT.EAT.MUST.NOT.EAT." really pushed the limits for me. I get the topic of the book is anorexia, but there are ways to describe feelings and settings without two pages of chanting.
I sure wouldn't want my fifteen year old daughter reading it either. The death surrounding the friend is weird and creepy. Plus the health issues, not something I would want my daughter going to bed with images in her mind.
It just wasn't me for me. At all.

#10: Zombie Cat - Isabel Atherton

(Affiliate link)

Tiddles is a suave, carefree kitty cat whose only pleasures in life are eating mice, wooing the ladies, and being generally apathetic toward his owner, Jake. But when a toxic spill occurs outside of town, Tiddles finds himself savagely attacked by a nasty-looking radioactive field mouse, and he wakes up as one of the undead. However, he still retains a bit of compassion and refrains—for now—from zombie Bacchanalian delights, such as eating living beings’ brains! Umm . . . any brains at all!

However, Tiddles, a.k.a. Zombie Cat, is decomposing rapidly and would prefer to live a normal life in the zombie apocalypse with his owner, Jake. But will Jake take in his former cuddly pet or will ZC be doomed to roam the streets trying to avoid the inevitable pull of his undead yearnings?Zombie Cat is a humorous adult picture book in the vein of Pat the Zombie and Ten Little Zombies: A Love Story. Isabel Atherton’s quirky storytelling combined with Bethany Straker’s captivating (and slightly grotesque!) illustrations make this the perfect addition to any Halloween collection. It’s the ideal gift for any crazed zombie fanatic—or equally crazed cat lover. With 14 color illustrations.

  • Hardcover: 32 pages
  • Publisher: Skyhorse Publishing; 1 edition (October 1, 2012)

Review:
Talk about an abrupt ending! I'm left going, "huh?"
I feel like it left off in the wrong spot or just too soon.
Other than that, it was fun, though not for kids. It might give them nightmares. It's humorous for teens or adults though.
Really awesome illustrations too, by Bethany Straker. They helped a lot to make it a fun read.

    Author Bio:
E L James is a former TV executive, wife and mother of two based in West London. Since early childhood she dreamed of writing stories that readers would fall in love with, but put those dreams on hold to focus on her family and her career. She finally plucked up the courage to put pen to paper with her first novel, Fifty Shades of Grey.

    Review:
If you're on my Facebook, you'll already know that I have Ryan Reynolds picked out as Mr. Grey.
    *Pause for swooning*
Now, for all the women out there that haven't read it yet, I have to ask you why??? Were you like me and thought it was too much for you? Well, that's judging a book by its' cover at its finest, I think.... especially now.
Unless you are a prude, most of the stuff in the book you probably do in the privacy of your home. The rest is fantasy, much like ogres and fairies, yet not as frightful. Stories are supposed to be about imagination and fantasy. At least, the good ones anyway.....
The story does have graphic sex scenes, whoopdie doo! It's also a great story about two characters, Mr. Grey and Miss Steele, and their "Basic Instinct" -like attraction.
So please, don't think it's some book of debauchery, though that is involved, but more of a mind game.
    Give it a chance.

    Review:
All the things I wrote in my review for the book, apply to this film as well. And that says a lot since the book made me have really high hopes for the film. I had all these images in my head already and needed the film to do it justice. And it didn't let me down!
Even the hubby watched the movie and loved it! That says a lot, he's quite picky.
I laughed and cried in all the same spots as the book, well it was so accurate a film. Really, there was no spots I would have done differently. Ang Lee is a fantastic director, and his eye is perfect for what this vivid movie needed to express the story. There really is not much dialogue so he had to be creative in filming, and he was.
I can see this stealing the show at all the awards this year. Definitely.

    My new favorite movie. Ever.

    Review:
I was sent a Pawstick to help the paws of my Pug and Shih Tzu.
Having really cold Arctic winds coming into the region, bringing snow and freezing temperatures, the paws of my dogs get sensitive. The salt also plays a factor in harming your pets paws. My poor dogs are small, so the salt is like little shards of glass on their paws. With that said, this stick couldn't have come at a better time.
It has a unique, minty smell. The dogs must like it, as my Pug kept licking at it. She likes mint, I guess. My Shih Tzu didn't bother with it except when I put it on, she had to smell it, then let me put it on her. It glides over their paws easily, not clumpy, but exactly like a giant chapstick. It definitely protected the pads of their paws, since they wore it, they didn't want to be picked up while walking. I knew it had to be helping.
The only downside is the little marks I see on my floor. It says it leaves no residue, but my floor tells another story. It left a little, and being the neat freak I am, I noticed. If you are not as anal as me about having shiny floors, you may not notice. It wasn't that big of a deal. Plus with the benefits of helping my dogs feel better about this weather, that counts more than a few prints here and there.
I'll be honest with you, now that we have used this, I can't see us not using it in the future. Like I said, my dogs are visibly happier in the weather with it on, and that is what it's all about.  Besides, for $4.99 you really can't go wrong!!!
