#63: Two-way Street - Lauren Barnholdt

This is Jordan and Courtney, totally in love. Sure, they were an unlikely high school couple. But they clicked; it worked. They're even going to the same college, and driving cross-country together for orientation.
Then Jordan dumps Courtney -- for a girl he met on the Internet.
It's too late to change plans, so the road trip is on. Courtney's heartbroken, but figures she can tough it out for a few days. La la la -- this is Courtney pretending not to care.
But in a strange twist, Jordan cares. A lot.
Turns out, he's got a secret or two that he's not telling Courtney. And it has everything to do with why they broke up, why they can't get back together, and how, in spite of it all, this couple is destined for each other.

Author Bio:
Lauren Barnholdt was born and raised in Syracuse, New York, and currently resides in Waltham, Massachusetts. When she's not writing, she watches a lot of reality TV.

Review:
I enjoyed how this story unfolded. With different perspectives, this story shows how infidelity affects all sides involved. Although, in a very intricate way.
I think Miss Barnholdt is one talented writer.
Usually if a story goes back and forth too much, I lose interest, but for this story and the things surrounding it, it worked.
I can say I wasn't that crazy about Courtney sometimes.... she irked me with her slightly immature ways... but that's a teenager for ya!
Romance lovers and contemporary lovers will definitely enjoy it.

#62: A Castle Of Sand - Bella Forrest

What Sofia has with Derek feels like a sandcastle; temporary and something that the waves of life and time will soon ruin...

Since the return of Gregor Novak, the island has turned several shades darker. His hatred toward Sofia and thirst for fresh blood lead to a brutal war igniting between father and son.

Meanwhile, the hunters are gaining formidable strength and resources by the day; they know that the safety of The Shade hangs entirely on its ability to remain hidden from them.

And a sinister secret lies in wait for Sofia within the bowls of an Egyptian desert ... a secret that threatens to crush her sandcastle much sooner than she could have expected.

Review:
Arrrrggghhhh!
That is me screaming at the ending!! It ended so abruptly and I'm like really needing it to continue....
Bella, you're killing me.....
I got does he or doesn't he playing over and over again in my mind.... driving me nuts....
Oh, this book was so good. I loved all the action, and there was tons in this one. This series just keeps getting better and better for me with each book I read. More drama, more action and definitely more suspense. I just can't get enough!!
Derek is still sooooooo swoon-worthy too!! Now that is one hot vampire!!!!
If you haven't read this series... get to it! You won't be disappointed!

Interview & Giveaway with Paige Pendleton

Paige W. Pendleton
And
The Black Ledge Series

About the Author:

The secrets of the Red Paint People have haunted Maine for 7000 years.  Paige is busy writing those tales.

Please tell readers about your current book.

Right now I'm working on The Black Ledge Series. I have the first two books out, and four more planned.

The Black Ledge Series was inspired by The Red Paint People. I became fascinated with them, and decided to explore aspects of their history as a magical adventure, mostly because there was something magical about them, and their “adventures”.
The Red Paint People were a tribe of indigenous people who lived on the coasts of New England and Atlantic Canada regions of North America thousands of years ago.
The name The Red Paint People arose from their use of Red Ochre to decorate their belongings, and themselves. They decorated tools, clothing, and the bodies of their dead in burial preparation.
They were bold seafarers. Swordfish bones discovered in archaeological sites tell us they were navigating deep and treacherous waters in the Atlantic. Thousands of years ago, in canoes.
And here's where the plot thickens. Archaeological excavations in Norway have unearthed tools and belongings with similar red marks/patterns to those discovered on the coast of Maine. Eerily similar red markings. Other clues point to trans-Atlantic travel. Rune Stones in North America that date long before the defined Viking Age.  A breed of domestic cat (the Maine Coon) shares DNA with the Norwegian Forest Cat. Strong similarities between some Native American and Ancient Norse myths suggest they gathered around the same campfire more than once.
Did Elves and Dwarves stow away on one of the return trips to Maine?  It appears they did.
Our story then takes a darker turn, as things tend to do on the coast of Maine, but our Once upon a time began in a land far, far away.

Who or what inspires your writing?

I never see the answer to that coming. Oddities. Situations.  A character hits me over the head.  So many things, but they tend to find me. I don't usually go looking for them.

How long did it take you to write your first novel?
Two months to get the first draft down. I tend to mull and plot for quite a while before I actually start typing. I spend longer revising, polishing, tightening.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Promo-ing.  The writing, all aspects, are a pleasure. I am in my element, there. Promo-ing properly?  Not so much, although I love events with readers.  Kids rock.

Do you have any writing rituals?
I'm not terribly disciplined. I'm kind of a binge writer, and I write until the ink stops flowing. Conversely, if it isn't flowing, I don't force it. I mull and ponder. Always solves the problem.

Have you written any thing else?
Besides the next books in the Black Ledge series, I have a juvenile mystery series I am also working on. No magic, just murder.
I hope to release the first book, UnattendeAd, this year.
I'm also jotting notes and plotting on two adult fiction works.  I have notebooks everywhere.

Any advice to aspiring writers?
Just start. Scrawling, typing, or painting on cave walls, however you write, start this minute and don't “pause” until you've finished your first draft.

Who are your favorite Authors?
So many favorites. Juvenile fiction holds a special place in my heart as I enjoyed so many adventures reading as a kid.  Madeline L'Engle, Joan Aiken, Mary O'Hara, Robert Lawson.

As an adult, I read everything, except misery fiction. When I want a good story I want something that leaves me satisfied, not troubled. A brownie sundae indulgence would be a Serge Storms adventure from Tim Dorsey.

What are your favorite books, or which book has impacted you the most?
Probably To Kill a Mockingbird. I read everything as a kid, and my Mother was great. She had hallways of books. No cable or video games, but there was never a lack of good books to read.

What are you currently reading?
Jen Blood and Vernon Baker are two friends, and also favorite authors. I am always waiting for their newest.

How do readers find out more about you?
I live in Maine with my husband and daughters (who are ruthless critics). I love to garden, sail, and read. My daughters show cattle, and we love being on the periphery of that. Great people, great times. We like cows.

Readers can follow the books, my interests, and get updates on the social media links.  You may see lots of shoes, chocolate, and horses on Pinterest.

Two eBooks for Two Winners!!!

Book One: The Keeper and the Rune Stone
An unholy ritual, a ticking clock. Four children discover there are things that go bump in the night ... Centuries ago a group of Elves committed an unholy ritual. But the ritual was a spectacular failure. It transformed the Elves into the Noctivagi - the beings we know as vampires. Striving to maintain a fragile peace, the ancient Elves and Dwarves negotiated an Accord, which they've renewed every year on the Summer Solstice. The ceremony depends on the magical Rune Stone, but it's missing. If it is not found—and quickly—the consequences could be dire, and not just for Elves and Dwarves. Four children, Rob, Jack, Eleanor, and Flora, stumble into a world of magic and mayhem when they move into Black Ledge, the old estate on the Maine coast, and discover they aren’t the only ones who live there.

Book Two: The Keeper and the Alabaster Chalice
The Black Ledge Series, Book II He’d bonded with the child. It was foretold, and so it would be. Black Ledge is inhabited again, but not everyone in the Realm is pleased. Charm turns to alarm when they meet Doris, the Acadian Water Witch, who's removed the Alabaster Chalice from its watery grave. The Noctivagi, drawn by the artifact's Water Magyk, seek the Chalice for their own nefarious purpose, and mayhem ensues. Eleanor, Rob, Jack, and Flora fight time and tide to return the Alabaster Chalice to the Undine Prince before the darkness steals it.

#61: Real Mom's Devotions To Go

Most devotional books for moms focus on the sweet, touching aspects of motherhood. Real Moms’ Devotions to Go is for the harried, tired mom who is long on love, but short on time.

It gives the reader real-life stories that she can easily identify with and the added benefit of concrete, stress reduction techniques that she can quickly learn and use.

Real Moms’ Devotions to Go not only entertains, but nourishes as well. It has a down-to-earth, realistic approach of the devotions and the mental health aspect of the stress management portion of the book.

Review:
It's no secret that I love reading devotionals. To take a moment with God each day always leaves me feeling better inside.
What this book teaches you is not only to talk with God, but to take time to mother yourself too. As mothers, we often neglect ourselves to put our families first, that will never change, but what mom's need to do is take a few minutes each day for themselves too. Take a bath, go for a walk around the block, read a book for a few minutes, whatever it is doesn't matter as long as it is what you want to do for you. You will feel better and be better for your family.

Giveaway & Interview with Karina Halle

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out.
Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently splits her time between her apartment in downtown Vancouver and her sailboat, where a book and a bottle of wine are always at hand. She is hard at work on her next novel.

Please tell readers about your current book.
Shooting Scars is the sequel to Sins & Needles. It picks up where the last book left off and has three very damaged, dark and sexy characters who intertwine on their own journey through revenge and redemption. It's a gritty, edgy romance guaranteed to take you on a wild ride.

Who or what inspires your writing?
I'm inspired by many things but music has to be number one. I've created books based on albums, characters based on musicians, scenes based on songs. Otherwise I'm quite inspired by film, worldly events, and my favorite authors.

When did you know you would be a writer?
Since I was a little girl - I was always drawing and making up stories.

How long did it take you to write your first novel?
Six weeks. I'd written many screenplays before but never had the patience to finish a novel. I decided to do Nano-Wrimo combined with a 30-day challenge and Darkhouse, (which is currently free on Amazon), was a result of that.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Not being distracted. I've been known to swear off the internet for weeks at a time and become a total social hermit just to get work done.

Do you have any writing rituals?
I go outside - for a walk or a bike ride, to clear my head. Then I make sure I have a lot of coffee at hand! When it gets really rough, I unplug the internet.

Have you written any thing else?
I have seven books and four novellas in the Experiment in Terror Series, with two more on the way. I have a horror romance called The Devil's Metal, with the sequel out in the fall. And the first two books in The Artists Trilogy, of course.

            Any advice to aspiring writers?
Stop talking about writing a book and just do it. And once you do write it, don't get discouraged. Don't expect to self-publish a hit book right away or get a publishing deal or an agent. It's an over-saturated market now and these things take time for most people. The success stories are not the norm.

           Who are your favorite authors?
 Stephen King, Karen Marie Monning

What are your favorite books, or which book has impacted you the most?
I love Jane Eyre, (which is also free for Kindle). The mystery, the creepiness, the romantic tension, the jackassy Mr. Rochester, Jane's headstrongness. Perfect blend of everything I love in a book.

          What are you currently reading?
Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement Moore.

How do readers find out more about you?
You can find me on Twitter @metalblonde
I'm also very active on my Facebook page.
And you can see me on Goodreads as well J

When I woke up, the first person I saw was Sophia, staring at me with wide-eyed concern. Despite the excruciating pain on my back, I had to smile at the sight of her. "Hey there..." I greeted softly.

F Is For Freda

Friends.
Real ones are few and far between. That was a hard lesson learned for me, but the ones I have now I hold dear to me.
But this wouldn't be right, with you getting to know me, if I didn't use this "F" opportunity to talk about myself. (Holy, narcissism, Batman!)
Freda, the voice behind this blog.
I was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1976. I also live here now, but haven't always. I did leave for about 7 years total, but made it back as an older teenager.
I was a rotten kid. Spoiled rotten. Always getting into mischief and paying the price. This means I spent the majority of my childhood in my bedroom, grounded, with only my books to occupy me.
And so a bookworm was born.
I read my mom's extensive Stephen King collection before puberty. Yup, it was good and bad. I loved the stories, but became afraid of the dark. Didn't stop me from reading horror at night, until I was much older.
In 1987 we moved to Dunnville, Ontario.
A.K.A. The country.
Gawd I hated it! I'm a city girl, 100%!
I was thrilled when we moved in 1989 to Nova Scotia. New place, new people, new experiences.
But that bombed!!
We lived in Merigomish. Yeah, didn't think you would have heard of it. When you drive through the "hamlet", you blink and you miss it. Seriously, I lived across the street from the post office and was RR#1. It was that small.
So again I agonized over my surroundings and life in general... gotta love teenage angst.
Thankfully we moved back to Ontario in 1992. Sadly, we only came back as far as Kingston.
When I got pregnant in 1994, I came all the way back to Hamilton. I needed to be home.
In March 1995, my son Kristopher was born. (Ironically on my dad's birthday.)
No, he wasn't born this big, this is just my favorite photo of him. (Yes, I took it.) He will be 19 in March.
He still lives at home, but you wouldn't know it. Typical teenager is always at his girlfriend's house.
Then, in 1997, my doppleganger was born. Brianna, my daughter.
She will be having her sweet sixteen in August. Sadly, she lives with her dad in Belleville, Ontario. I have the joys of missing her terribly every day, but this is just how life is.
You have met my furbabies on the A Is For Animals post, and met Vinny my hubby many times I'm sure... just in case, here he is:
We've been together 13 years and he is my mate for life.
You just know these things......
And you met my dad(s) a couple weeks ago through D Is For Dad(s) post.  With knowing my love for Elvis, books and poetry, which I have posted on here, there is not much more to tell.
I lie.
I'm a shoe-whore.
Now, there is nothing else to tell. I'm like a book. You see the cover, make a judgement, and then once you open the book, and the story unfolds, you will see a funny, honest, intelligent, caring, compassionate, loving woman. That's all that counts in the long run.
Now you know about me a little more.... at least the personal side I'm not-so-crazy about sharing. Won't you share something about you in the comments? I hate feeling narcissistic. Thanks!

#60:Chameleon - Kelly Oram (With Giveaway)

Freda's Voice was not compensated for posting. Freda's Voice was given a copy for review purposes. Opinions are 100% owned by this blog.

For small-town rebel Dani Webber magic and monsters are no more real than the Easter Bunny… until the day she accidentally stops time. Dani quickly discovers that not only do supernaturals exist, but she herself is one of them. This is great news for her life-long best friend Russ, who can finally come clean about his own supernatural status and his undying love for her. Before the two can start to enjoy the long overdue relationship, Dani is taken by a powerful council of supernaturals who believe she is the Chosen One destined to save them from extinction.

As if being kidnapped and expected to save the world isn’t bad enough, an ancient prophecy warns of the Chosen One’s dark nature: “Only the truest love will keep her an agent for good.” The council believes they know who this “true love” is and, unfortunately, that person isn’t Russ. The mysterious, powerful and devastatingly handsome Seer is the last person Dani wants in her life, but when she starts having visions of a horrific future, she has no one else to turn to for help.

Soon Dani finds herself torn between two very different boys with two very different opinions of whom she can trust. With the visions getting worse and time running out, Dani is forced to put aside her feelings and work with both the Seer and Russ before an ancient evil is unleashed upon the earth.

Freda's Thoughts:
This book is about Dani/Danielle, and she is as cool as they come. She has an unheard of ability and can change like a chameleon through the various supernatural species. It's so different from any other paranormal book I've read before. I really dug it!!!
Gotta say, I love Duncan!!! *Totally swoooooooooning*
When you read it, I promise, you'll love him too. You just won't be able to help yourself.
The author left plenty of room for the next book. At least, I hope this is a series. Yes, please!!!

John William and the Bandits of Basswood

We already know Alexander Drake’s story. His father, John William started it all years before when he entered Azra’s Pith. This is his story. John William was born an explorer; just like his dad before him. His adventure really began with the worst year of his life. He lived everyday in misery until his twelfth birthday. He set out to turn things around and find his smile again. A new friend gave him an invitation he could not turn down… follow me and change your destiny. He never imagined being captured by bandits and taken to a ship riddled with river rats was part of his fate. Not just any bandits – the Bandits of Basswood; known to be a ruthless and wild crew of thieves. Trying to escape would be a ridiculous idea. No one has ever escaped and lived to tell about it. Someone should have mentioned that to John William before he snuck off the ship. The chase out of Basswood was on. He took a chance to change his destiny and ended up on a wild ride to save his life.

#59: Jack Templar and the Monster Academy - Jeff Gunhus (With Giveaway & Excerpt)

  monster hunter tour

Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy (Book 2)
After barely surviving the onslaught of monsters that tried to kill him the day before his fourteenth birthday, Jack Templar leaves his hometown on a quest to rescue his father and discover the truth about his past. Joined by his friends Will and T-Rex, and led by Eva, the mysterious one-handed monster hunter, Jack sets out for the Monster Hunter Academy where he hopes to find answers to his questions. Little does he suspect that the Academy is filled with dangers of its own, many of them more terrifying than anything he’s faced so far.

Jack Templar: Monster Hunter
Orphan Jack Templar has no memory of his parents and only the smallest details from his Aunt Sophie about how they died. The day before Jack's fourteenth birthday, things start to change for him. At first it's great: A sudden new strength helps him defend his nose-picking friend "T-Rex" from the school bully, and even his crush, Cindy Adams, takes notice. But then a mysterious girl named Eva arrives and tells him two facts that will change his life forever. First, that he's the descendent of a long line of monster hunters and he's destined to be in the family business. Second, that there's a truce between man and monster that children are off-limits...until their fourteenth birthday! Jack has only one day before hundreds of monsters will descend on his little town of Sunnyvale and try to kill him. As if that weren't enough, things get even more complicated when Jack discovers that the Lord of the Creach (as the monsters are collectively known) holds a personal grudge against him and will do anything to see that Jack has a slow and painful death. To stay alive and save his friends, Jack will have to battle werewolves, vampires, harpies, trolls, zombies and more. But perhaps the most dangerous thing he must face is the truth about his past. Why do the other hunters call him the last Templar? Why do they whisper that he may be the "One?" Why do the monsters want him dead so badly? Even as these questions plague him, he quickly discovers survival is his new full-time job and that in the world of monster hunters, nothing is really what it seems.

EXCERPT
I leaned up against the ship’s rusty metal railing, barely able to catch my breath. I took a pull from a water bottle as I looked out at the hundreds of miles of black ocean that stretched out in every direction, the full moon painting broad, glowing strokes across the surface that seemed to point right at me.
I always imagined that the middle of the Atlantic Ocean would be a violent place, filled with giant, rolling waves and massive storms, but the water that night was as calm as if we were on a lake. Good thing too, since the trawler we had been on for the last week was a creaky old lug of a ship whose best days were far, far behind it.
“Come on,” said a girl behind me with a distinct English accent. “Break’s over.”
I was about to complain when I instinctively felt the attack coming. I rolled to my right and a sword sparked against the metal where I had just been resting. I held up my own sword in front of me and crouched down.
“Eva, we’ve been going for hours,” I said. “Can’t we relax just for once?”
Eva paced in front of me in the shadows of the main deck of the trawler. Her brown hair was tied back in a ponytail like every time we sparred. She held a sword in her right hand and had a nasty barbed hook screwed into the socket on her left wrist.
Even though it would seem that a lethal iron hook would attract my attention first, it was Eva’s face that always distracted me when we fought. Even in the dim light, even though she was trying to run me through with her sword, she was just about the most attractive girl I’d ever seen. Every time I looked too closely at her face, I thought of the kiss she gave me right before my fight with Ren Lucre. As I pictured it in my mind again, Eva smiled, her teeth nearly glowing in the dim light. That smile wasn’t good news.
She lunged at me, using a twisting combination to my weak side that I had to jump backward to avoid. I blocked a low blow from her hook, but felt a breeze as her sword swept sharply within an inch of my right ear. I reached up and felt a small patch of missing hair. I guess it was closer than an inch.
“You’ll get more than a haircut unless you practice harder,” she said.

Review:
This book picks up right where the first one left off. You definitely need to read book one to know what's going on. I found this one much more exciting though, and that says a lot since the first was so awesome and high on my list.
So many more groovy characters to fall in love with, like Tiberon. All of them add something special to the story, even if at first you don't like them. Believe me when I tell you, there's at least one character everyone will begin off disliking, but learn you are wrong to be so quick to judge.
Younger lads will especially get a kick out of this series. Dragons, goblins, and power wielders of all sorts in this book fill it with action and adventure from the beginning to end. They will also love the secret website shared in the back of the book.
Very clever writing from a very talented author. Jeff Gunhus is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine.

Quickie Giveaway: Seeds of Discovery - Breanna Puttroff

Quinn Robbins never planned on sacrificing anything. Her life was perfect - everything she thought a teenager's should be. But all of that is about to change. What starts out as curiosity over the strange behavior of the reclusive William Rose quickly leads her to an adventure she never could have imagined - to the discovery of an alternate universe where time works differently than it does in Quinn's world - a world where even simple electricity is advanced technology, and where medical knowledge is desperately needed. Stuck in this secret world for ten days, Quinn will discover that sometimes we find ourselves - and who our real friends are - in unexpected places. Seeds of Discovery is Book One of the Dusk Gate Chronicles, a new Young Adult series that has been described by readers as "The Chronicles of Narnia meets Cinderella." Go on an unforgettable journey with characters who will find their way straight into your heart.
