#52: Reader's Digest: Stories In Uniform (With Giveaway)

Stories in Uniform is a chronological retrospective of the best military pieces Reader's Digest has run; pieces that will make you weep, make your heart sing, inspire you, enrage you, and make you laugh. Beginning in World War I and continuing through to the war in Iraq, readers will follow soldiers into the trenches, peer in on emergency surgery taking place in the depths of the ocean, watch heroes carry the bodies of fallen brethren, trail Eisenhower for the three days leading up to  D-Day, and be inspired as men and women rise above and beyond normal human limits to preserve our rights and save  their friends.
Stories include:
• A moving memorial to D-Day
• A tribute to one of the first African-Americans to serve as a Naval Officer
• A pilot rescued after his F-16 is shot down
• A soldier returns to the front after losing his foot in action
• An American soldier who takes a big risk to save a dying Afghan girl
This book gives a complete perspective on the hell that is war, the love that grows from camaraderie, the pride from accomplishing the impossible, the humor that springs from the military bureaucracy, and more.

Review:
With Memorial Day approaching, this book is an ideal way of reminiscing. I know that the holiday itself is American, and I am not, but as the book states, "War affects us all."
The stories shared within this book are real events in someones' life. Moving and heroic events. Times of sacrifice and freedom. Each one inspiring, admirable and also a lesson of peace, resilience and honor.
This is a great way to pay tribute to all the men and women in uniform, by hearing their stories.

  1. Strong, courageous, gutsy, you name it, I would never be able to be in the service. Thank God for the American services.

  2. I think people in the service are the best. My own husband put in 20 years. The whole time I never met a soldier that wasn't willing to help or do anything for you.

REVIEW:
I sorta hated the beginning.
Starts outs so dark that you can't really make anything out. Hard to know what's going on if you can't see.
It doesn't take long to get light though.
Thankfully.
Man, does the story ever pick up after that. I don't remember much about the original but this one is intense. Right to the very last second too.
Sydney is badass and shows it throughout. Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone thought you were o…

This is the eighth and final season.

REVIEW: I loved the whole series, but especially loved this season as it wrapped it all up.  There were a couple of moments that were so incredibly tragic, but also a couple moments where the most tragic things couldn't have happened to better people. Take Sussy for example. God, how I hated that woman through the whole show and couldn't wait for her to get what was coming to her. Did she get it here? You have to watch and see! This is the season where you will sit on the edge of your seat, waiting to see who will win the kingdom. Does your favorite character prevail above the others? MIne d…
