Welcome to the October edition of monthly news!
Happy Halloween!!
I did a guest review for a Zombie-Themed Event at VVB32 Reads Blog.
I also attended She's Connected in Toronto, a blogger conference. It was exhausting and exciting!
I also changed the blog design and look. That was fun and challenging. I am thankful for your feedback.
We also had a hurricane blow through our city. Very rare for southern Ontario. You can read my initial post. I also wrote an update in the aftermath of Sandy.

#113: Makeup to Breakup - Peter Criss

(Affiliate link)

  • Hardcover: 384 pages
  • Publisher: Scribner (October 23, 2012)
  • ISBN: 9781451620825

This is a book written by Peter Criss. It documents his whole life, from a little lad banging on his moms pots to a grown man playing venues to millions. Makeup to Breakup is a no-holds-barred version of Peter Criss's experiences within and without a band. He tells it like it is, all of it. From growing up in Brooklyn to being a founding member of Kiss, and even his experiences around his hit song, "Beth". A shocking tell all story from one of the greatest drummers of our time.

I have been a fan of Kiss's for as far back as I can remember. While I admit, it was Gene Simmons and his demon character that appealed to me most, I still enjoyed all of the original four members of the band. Paul with his bold, big voice, Ace with his coolness about him, and the Catman who's song Beth is the most beautiful rock ballad ever!  When I heard about a year ago that Peter Criss was writing a book I contacted Simon & Schuster about a copy. So you could say I was slightly excited. I always wondered what happened, why did he come and go so much, and why is two other guys in the band now??? Well, everything I ever wondered and more is in this book. Seriously. A couple of times I was floored by what I was reading 'cause I just had no idea.  What a journey they all have taken. Being part of something that will definitely go on forever, and with sharing gritty details of what seedy stardom is really all about, makes you crave even more. Crazy to think, but it's true.

I think this is the kind of tell-all book that Kiss fans are either gonna love or hate. There will be no in-between with this, it's just too honest, and you'll either appreciate it or think he's bashing the band. Your call either way, but I don't believe that was his intention, just sayin'.

#111: Blood and Mistletoe - E.J. Stevens

Blood and Mistletoe is a novella that follows Shadow Sight, in the Ivy Granger series. I read and reviewed Shadow Sight, and even though it wasn't the most perfect book I have ever read, it was exciting and interesting enough that I wanted to carry on the series.

Ivy Granger is not your average private detective, because she has a paranormal ability. With that ability comes relationships with beings that normal people are not meant to have, like vampires and faeries. It's Ivy's job, with the help of some great characters, to solve problems and crimes in the paranormal and reality realms.

This novella picks up exactly where Shadow Sight left off. Same people, same place. That was good, I prefer series to do that. I have to admit though, this story packed a little more punch than the first book for me. In a short period of time, it became like salt in a dish. It gave the original story more flavor. I now look more forward to another book than I did previously, which is a good thing. This novella actually felt like an extension of action from the first story.

This is a series I think most paranormal fans are going to love. Of course you can't have one without the other though, so read book one first.

4/5

I'd also like to add I have read book one in another series of E.J's, She Smells the Dead. It's a super groovy story that I am still planning on continuing.  I also read her dark prose of poetry, Shadows of Myth and Legend. Creepily awesome is what it was! Be sure to check those out as well!

EXCERPT
Claire crawled onto a stool on the other side of the island and smiled. Neither of them talked for several minutes as they listened to the water in the pot heat.

When I grow up, I’m going to play with Sweetwater Canyon all the time.”

Are you sure you want to hang out with all us old folks?”

You’re not all old. Well maybe a little old. But Kat isn’t old.”

Rachel smiled. “That’s true. She’s only seventeen.” And going on twenty-five it seemed sometimes.

Oh, seventeen? That is old.” Claire put a finger to her lips and furrowed her brow. “How old do I have to be to play in the band all the time?”

Probably at least eighteen.”

But, you just said Kat—”

Kat is different, because her mother plays in the band and can watch her all the time.”

Well, you can watch me all the time. You can be my mother.”

Rachel gulped.

Well, can’t you?”

Can’t she what?” Noel walked in the room and lifted Claire off the chair in a big hug, swinging her around the room. “Can’t she what? She can do anything she wants.”

See,” Claire leaned forward and looked at Rachel over Noel’s shoulder. “See, even Daddy thinks you can be my mother.”

Whoa.” Noel set Claire back on the stool. “I’m not sure what I walked in on here.” He sent an accusing glance to Rachel. “You already have a mother, Claire.”

I know. Not my real mother. My second mother. You know, like my friend, Megan. Her mommy and daddy got divorced and her daddy married a new mommy. So, Megan has two mommies now. See? Rachel can be my second mommy. Okay?”

My review of Friends Forever

This is a very fun read for girls, though I didn't feel there was any lessons to be learned. It follows the lives of four Lego girls, showing what they on a daily basis and the pets they have. Colorful, action photos of the Lego girls accompany the entire book, bringing it to life. Parents will be happy letting their kids read this series, as kids will enjoy this as a source of entertainment.

Halloween Decorations to Make Your House Look Spooky

Halloween is just around the corner and if you’re in the mood to scare your neighbors and your family members with terrifying decorations, it’s not too late to implement bloodcurdling pieces! If you don’t have a budget to buy Halloween decorations you can always head to the dollar store and be creative with what is available there, such as fake spiders and spider web that will cover your entire home with spooky Halloween elements. However, if you set aside some money to spend on some innovative Halloween props, here are some ideas to get you started!

Start with Your Interior –

Before adding props and spooky pieces to your exterior, start with your interior. Head to stores like Target and pick up towels and soap that have a Halloween theme. Look for blood dripping candles or better yet do a DIY project and add red to your candlesticks instead of spending the money! There’s also color changing pathway ghosts, giant spiders, and hanging werewolves that will make your home come alive with spooky decorations.

If you have an aquarium in your interior there are small plastic ghosts and goblins that you can place at the bottom of the tank and don’t forget about a fish tank stand to prop up your aquarium so that it will stand out in a room! You also can cover the tank with spider webs, which will add to the Halloween ambiance. Pretty soon you’ll have a scary interior full of spooky props that will certainly stand out and scare your family members and guests at every turn.

Outdoor Decorations

Now it’s time to revamp the outside of your home. There are large gothic tombstones that can sit on the outside of your front door, scaring the trick or treaters whenever they drop by to stock up on candy. Of course there is also a zombie sign, witch props, and spider webs that you can drape over your outdoor chilling Halloween decorations. Allow your imagination to take wing and decorate to your heart’s content. Smile with gladness when your friends take notice and your family will certainly be glad that you made the small changes – now you can celebrate Halloween in style, pure terror and delight!

A Short Trip to Realm of the Lost

What happens when you die before your time?

The Realm of the Lost is a middle grade novella that tells the story of thirteen-year-old Kathleen "Kat" Gallagher. After a tragic accident, Kat finds herself stuck in the place where people go when they have died before their time. Upon her arrival, Kat meets two of the young inhabitants of The Realm of the Lost. Will she learn to embrace her new surroundings? Little does Kat know, the relationships she builds in death will teach her to appreciate the ones she had in life.

Excerpt:
It was warm when I came to, and I felt no pain. Standing with ease, I bent over and inspected my pant-legs, searching for some remnant of dirt or ice. Nothing. Could this be a dream?
Then I noticed a bright orange ray reflecting off my necklace. The glare almost blinded me. I surveyed my surroundings.
Positioned atop solid dirt ground, I gasped in awe. Pine trees stood skyscraper high, haloed by dusty golden light. The sound of chirping birds echoed all around, and I spotted, to my left, what looked like a duck, but with a sharper and more pronounced beak. Bending down to inspect the creature as it waddled past, I heard a small voice from behind me.
"If you're a poacher, you belong in the under realm."
"What?" I asked, turning to face a boy who couldn't be more than eight. He wore navy blue shorts that folded at the tips of his scrawny knees. His white-collared shirt, grey vest and checkered cap reminded me of something out of an old movie. I couldn't help smiling as he stood, arms crossed, with an air of authority.
"If you're a poacher, you are in the wrong realm," the boy said.
"I'm not a poacher. I've been in an accident andwrong realm?"
The boy sighed, twiddling his thumbs in a way that made me think of my brother.
"Okay," he continued, after an awkward pause. "Well, first, do you know where you are?"
"Like I said, I was in an accident. I guess I passed out. I don'tI'm not sure if my mother knows"
"Oh. No. She wouldn't know a thing like this."
"A thing like what?" I demanded, stomping my foot.
"That you've come to the Realm of the Lost."

Book Description:
She picked the worst guy to have an affair with! - Evil stalks in Hawaii

Michelle was brutally attacked in her locked hotel room in Las Vegas. The police didn't believe her and thought she must have lured a man up to her hotel room for a little sexual adventure, which went dangerously out of control.

Michelle sustained visible scars from the terrifying and almost lethal attack, but pure fear motivated the move from her home in California to Hawaii. She's scared her attacker will come back. She's sure the next time he'll kill her. Now she has a successful career and she figures abstinence is an acceptable, if lonely, way to live.

Michelle decides that an affair with a wickedly handsome man who moves into her building might cure her of the humiliating, embarrassing, and uncontrollable anxiety attacks which plague her whenever she finds herself alone with a man.

How could she know she made the worst possible choice?

Omar Satinov, the man Michelle has chosen, is a secret, whispered legend across several continents. His lure is a mystical religion based upon Witchcraft; his hook, the addictive herbal products he sells his followers. But does he really have supernatural powers, as many of his disciples believe?

Short Excerpt
It was just past twilight, almost time for the Crystal Prophesies. Omar leaned his elbows on the penthouse balcony, enjoying the moment. This was a magical time of day and he was a magician. He preferred calling himself a Necromancer to the common titles: warlock, conjuror, magis, seer or wizard. There were subtle variations, but he fancied 'romancer' in his title. Necromancer. It described him. He romanced his way into hearts and minds. With the help of a little magic.
As he gazed at the panorama spread out below, the Pacific slowly changed from light blue to a misty topaz. Lush clouds floated on the horizon, and stars began to glow. To his left was the tinsel-tourist Waikiki, and to his right the city of Honolulu was lighting up. Below him, in this very building, he could sense the presence of a remarkable woman.
He turned, gazing through plate glass windows into his new penthouse. Ginger and Samson were inside. Ginger noticed his look and, with a flourish, she uncovered an enormous crystal ball from its leather shroud. She winked at him. Ginger was a disciple, a beautiful tall woman, with long curly red hair. She wore a flowing blue gown for the ceremony.
It was a tradition for the three of them to gaze into the crystal ball to divine their future when they expanded to a new location. They had arrived in Oahu a week ago. Tonight was perfect, the time of the full moon.

Omar went inside and sat down in front of the crystal. The sphere was almost two feet in diameter and sparkled on a base of black onyx. The three were seated in the main living room, beneath a skylight. White rafters crossed the cathedral ceiling. The room was dark except for a cold silvery glow from the candles Ginger had placed around the room.
Omar passed his hands over the crystal ball several times for theatrical effect, principally for Samson, who was watching with curious eyes. Omar's acolyte, Samson was a gigantic man who would never age mentally. He did remember this ritual. His mouth was open in anticipation.
Omar frowned and leaned closer, gazing into the depths of the crystal. Indeed, the omens were not auspicious. Red forms floated amorphously inside, constantly changing shape. This denoted the substance that controlled all magical rites. Blood was a fluid like the tide; it flowed like the ocean, was coaxed by the moon to move subtly in bodies, causing emotional changes called lunacy. Sometimes it spilled.
The black he observed, swirling around the red forms like a night wind, could be taken as a symbol of his own influence. It was the bright white light clashing there which forced Omar's dark eyebrows to slide together. White, an opposing force, seemed capable of exerting great influence in these Hawaiian islands. Omar couldn't tell if it indicated an old curse peculiar to these islands, with their ancient polytheist beliefs, or if it referred to a threatening individual.

The white was glowing, taking over.  There was busy movement inside the crystal.  It might have been a reflection from the stark white walls, but Omar was not taking chances.

"Who will sacrifice?" he asked, frowning at Ginger and Samson in turn.  He took a dagger from the leather sheath that Ginger had placed beside the crystal ball.

The colossal young man cowered away.

Omar shook his head.  Samson let out a tiny moan, but Omar swiftly reached across the crystal and pointed the tip of the dagger at Ginger.

"I need heart blood," Omar said.

Ginger closed her eyes and nodded.  He made a small slashing cut above her left breast, above her heart.  The cut was superficial, but blood immediately started flowing.

Ginger leaned forward and red dripped on the round crystal ball, and slowly, like wine with good legs, inched down its sides.

Omar recited incantations and waved his long expressive hands.  Both Ginger and Samson saw silver sparks extend from his fingertips and enter into the crystal. Ginger thought the effect might have been starlight drifting down from the skylight above.  Samson was sure it was magic.

Omar peered into the depths of the crystal and was satisfied.  The white light was winking out.  The sacrifice had been potent.

His mind again sought the lovely feminine presence he had felt below him in this building.  When he found it he smiled.  His final aspiration would be fulfilled.  The Crystal Prophesy said so.

#109: With the Stroke of a Pen Claim Your Life - Jane Blaufus

While I was at She's Connected Blogger Conference this weekend, I was given an opportunity to read and review this book I'm about to tell you about. I have to tell you, this is the most powerful book I have ever read.
Ok, so the cover is not what pulled me into this book. I hadn't even really got a good look at the cover when I knew I had to read it, and thanks to another blogger, Mrs. Z , I was able to.

I was listening to the publicist for this book talk about how she hounded her husband in the car ride home from a trip, and thought, "it must be important". I listened to her describe how it can help you fulfill your natural desire to protect your future and protect the ones you love.

This book is exactly that and more. It brought out every single emotion in me, but what it brought out most, is my natural need to secure my future and those of the ones I love.

No one likes to talk about death, and the after life, but we have to. It is a natural thing that we must do like securing for retirement. This book is a great guideline to do all those things that are difficult to do.

I definitely feel I need to get a better hold of my future. Sadly, I realize how unprepared my after-life is going to be, and in turn, I leave a lot in the laps of those I love. Unless I make a change. I have been discussing this book with the hubster from the start. By page seven I was in tears and absorbing every single word off the page. By page twenty I was laughing and deeply connected to the stories. Because of it, we will be making a life change and preparing for our whole life and not just the now.

Crazy to think how a person sharing their most tragic story can open ones' eyes. I wish I had an unlimited supply of copies to hand out to people too. This is one of those books that once you read, you'll have to share it with everyone.  The message definitely needs to be heard, so please get yourself a copy today! Go to The Blaufus Group website for information.

Elegant Street Oversized Shoulder Bag with Pouch Pendant

Oasap is an online site where you can purchase high quality, and trendy fashions at a great price!

I have been a fan of theirs since the first time I browsed the site. I could sit for hours going through the items, that change weekly, adding things to my ever-growing wish list.

This is my third time shopping at Oasap, and it is always a fast, convenient way to get what I want without leaving home. They have returns, but I have yet to use them, they are that good.

Usually I would show you photo from their website, but I will show you the two orders I have made.
This is the first garment I received, a slim printed vest top.
I love it, and wore it all summer long! It was so comfortable, but you can read more at my review.
The second garment I ordered was thick black seam-free leggings.
Which I also wore to day two at She's Connected this past weekend. It was cold, and with my sweater dress they looked awesome!! Anyway, you can check out that review too if you like.
And here is a sneak-peek from the conference where I wore them.
(Photo with author Cathy Buchanan)
So you can see how versatile they are. Also shows a range of great things from Oasap.

And now my opinion on the shoulder bag....
I used the bag for the conference this past weekend, since it was conservative enough and matched my suit. I loved the leather detail, and was happy the pouch inside could hold my ID and such, and the best part is that is was attached. You couldn't pull it out and steal my ID. Not that I thought someone would, but you just never know....
It was easy to carry all I needed, a notebook, pens, business cards, snacks because I am diabetic, my meds to go along with that, a bottle of water, and tons of swag got thrown in as well throughout the weekend. Although I did carry a shopping bag inside my bag, to hold that swag.
Still this bag was sturdy, comfortable and held up well.
I love it!

So listen ladies, especially you who shop online. Go and check out the website, you never know what you will find that will flip your switch, and I am positive, even if it's an accessory like mine, you will find something.
