#89: My Life Undecided - Jessica Brody

(Affiliate link)

PLEASE READ THIS! MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT! Okay, maybe that was a bit melodramatic, but I’m sorry, I’m feeling a bit melodramatic at the moment. Here’s the deal. My name is Brooklyn Pierce, I’m fifteen years old, and I am decisionally challenged. Seriously, I can’t remember the last good decision I made. I can remember plenty of crappy ones though. Including that party I threw when my parents were out of town that accidentally burned down a model home. Yeah, not my finest moment, for sure. But see, that’s why I started a blog. To enlist readers to make my decisions for me. That’s right. I gave up. Threw in the towel. I let someone else decide which book I read for English. And whether or not I accepted an invitation to join the debate team from that cute-in-a-dorky-sort-of-way guy who gave me the Heimlich maneuver in the cafeteria. (Note to self: chew the melon before swallowing it.) I even let them decide who I dated! Well, it turns out there are some things in life you simply can’t choose or have chosen for you—like who you fall in love with. And now everything’s more screwed up than ever. But don’t take my word for it. Read the book and decide for yourself. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll scream in frustration. Or maybe that’s just me. After all, it’s my life.
  • Hardcover: 320 pages
  • Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR); First Edition edition (June 7, 2011)
  • ISBN: 9780374399054

AUTHOR BIO:
Jessica Brody knew from a young age that she wanted to be a writer. She started "self-publishing" her own books when she was seven years old, binding the pages together with cardboard, wallpaper samples and electrical tape.
Brody graduated from Smith College in 2001 with a double major in Economics and French and a minor in Japanese. She went to work for MGM Studios as a Manager of Acquisitions and Business Development, and then, in 2005, she quit her job to follow her dream of becoming a published author.
Brody is the author of the young adult novel The Karma Club and two novels for adults--The Fidelity Files and Love Under Cover. Jessica's books are published in over ten foreign countries including the U.K., France, Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, Brazil, China, Portugal, and Taiwan. She now works full time as a writer and producer, and currently splits her time between Los Angeles and Colorado.

MY OPINION:
Okay, if you all thought I loved The Karma Club, wait till I tell you about this one!  It was even better, even more fast-paced, and even more entertaining! I found myself laughing out loud and even trying not to cry in one specific part that really touched my inner most being.
And yet I found karma to be a theme in this book too, though totally different from The Karma Club.
I really do love Jessica's style of writing, and this one is even more fun with little blog posts inside. Seriously if you love a good, quick read, then get this one!

The Battle Is On! #LoveCDNBeef

Grilling VS Marinating VS Simmering
With

I thought I knew everything there is to know about beef. I mean, besides it being from a cow, and different cuts are better than others, what else was there to know??? Lots!!! From the origins of the names of the cuts of beef, to choosing the right cut for what you are cooking, to why the fat in beef. All these things are factors in what you eat and how you eat it. You can read more for yourself on Beef 101. Or visit the Canada Beef website.

Upon closer inspection at my grocery store, I noticed they label their beef sections according to whether you are grilling, marinating or simmering. Though I found I need the deli part for the butcher to get the proper cuts  of marinating meat, the other cuts there were good, just not the cut I was looking for. Why didn't I notice this before??? Not sure, but am glad I know of it now.

So the one day, I decided to get one steak for grilling and one to marinate and then grill. I made sure to get the right cuts of beef, according to the list on the Beef 101 website. I marinated the one for 4 or 5 hours, while I just salt and peppered the other.
We, (the hubby and myself), cut the salt & peppered one in half and each had a filet of marinated steak. Along with coleslaw and potato salad. It was quite a meal!
We like our steaks medium-rare, and I hit that on the mark.... Gordon Ramsay would be proud.... and we both gave each other our opinions based on each steak. While I enjoyed the salt & pepper grilled steak, finding it very tender and juicy, the hubby preferred the marinated steak for its' tenderness and flavor.  I used the Easy Asian Grilled Marinated Steak recipe, courtesy of the website, minus the Sesame seeds. We're not into sesame seeds here. Still the marinade was delicious and yes, very easy to make.

Now I still had to simmer some beef and see if I liked that better than grilling, or if the hubby likes it more than marinating. No one likes a tie and so far, that's where we're at. So back to the grocery store I go a couple of days later, to get some simmering steak to cut into thin strips for fajitas. Along with the fixings I like, of course.
It smelled so good, and had a vibrancy to it with the colors, my mouth was going nuts salivating. At least with simmering steak it doesn't take very long.
It was delicious! Yet it was not my favorite way to eat steak. Simmering steak is far more chewy and grisly than I prefer. The hubby liked it more than I did but still love his marinating steak more. In the end, simmering steak is not one that will be needed often. Since we have a tie, and a stalemate at that, I will have to alternate between grilling and marinating. That way everyone is happy.

Grilling - 1
Marinating - 1
Simmering - 0

Okay, you didn't think I would just ramble on about eating, did you?! I have some things to share with you all before I go. First, I know the summer is almost over, but in Australia, or 'Stralia as the locals say it, is just about to start their summer, so these tips would be beneficial to you. It's all about grilling for the summer. Still we will have a summer next year, and if you're anything like me, you grill all year long anyway, so check it out.  Secondly there is a Twitter party to tell you all about! It is sponsored by Canadian Beef @CanadianBeef and ShesConnected @shesconnected, happening September 13th, 2012 @ 9pm EST.   Use hashtag #LoveCDNBeef and be sure to follow Canada Beef and She's Connected so you don't miss anything!

#88: The Karma Club - Jessica Brody

(Affiliate link)

Madison Kasparkova always thought she understood how Karma works. You know—do good things and you will be rewarded, do something bad and you’ll get what’s coming to you. But when Maddy’s long-time boyfriend gets caught tongue-wrestling with Miss Perfect Body Heather Campbell, and they wind up the hot new couple at school, it seems like Karma is on a break. So Maddy and her friends decide to start the Karma Club—a secret, members-only organization for dealing with messes the universe is leaving behind. They’re just doing what Karma should have done in the first place, right?

In four short years , Jessica has sold nine novels (two adult novels to St. Martin's Press and seven young adult novels to Farrar, Straus, Giroux.) THE KARMA CLUB, Jessica's first young adult novel released in April of 2010 and her second YA release, MY LIFE UNDECIDED hit bookstores in June 2011.

MY OPINION:
I won all 3 books of Jessica's, and she even graciously signed and personalized them all for me. That shows what a lovely person she is.
And her writing is fun, fast-paced and entertaining! I devoured this almost 300 page book pretty fast! It was because of the great story mixed with a style of writing that just flows so easily off the page and into your imagination.  I really appreciate the message too, considering this is a novel geared for tweens/teens. I would definitely let my 15 year old daughter read it.
I haven't read 52 Reasons to Hate My Father yet, but can see why it has been slated for film, based on the writing and flow of this one.
I am now a super-fan!! I can't wait to get on the next book, so I won't..... watch for my review of My Life Undecided coming real soon.

My Review of Don't Mess With Texas

MY OPINION:
I loved this book!
The story was a lot of fun to read. It had a suspense surrounded a woman who may or may not have been kidnapped as a child. I won't tell you one way or the other, but I will tell you between that and all the sexual chemistry flying around, it was an exciting and intense read!
I get a kick out of these Texan characters, who are so charming and really make you enjoy reading whatever they're doing. Even the simple and mundane things in life such as work or eating.
I think this can be read as a standalone book, but don't recommend that. I think it's totally worth reading from the beginning.
I'm rather looking forward to book 3, Texas Hold 'Em.

Ten Things You Will Learn from Blame it on Texas.

  1. Guys don’t like to play dress up; but when one willingly dresses as a clown for their six-year-old niece’s birthday party—because the real clown canceled—he’s one special uncle. And could possibly make a special hero for some lucky lady.
  2. Sometimes, fear itself can do much more damage to us than the thing we’re actually afraid of.
  3. Any man who doesn’t cuss up a blue streak when you dump a plate of hot grits on him can’t be all bad. (In fact, he might just be The One.)
  4. It’s important to remember the lessons of the past so we can use them when making decisions for the future. But those lessons should never keep us from having the future we deserve.
  5. Before accusing the sexy guy who pounced, knocked you down, and crawled on top of you of being foreplay impaired; check to see if someone is shooting at you.
  6. The southern delicacy of a banana and mayonnaise sandwich may be an acquired taste, especially when a hungry hero chomps down on the delicacy and is expecting ham and cheese.
  7. If you think getting caught screaming and dancing on top of a mattress—all while attempting to rescue your cat from an overzealous dog—can be slightly embarrassing, try doing it while you’re wet from the shower, and as naked as a jay bird. Oh, and just to make it even more fun, make sure you're caught by your possible love interest who hasn’t seen you naked yet, and . . . (yes it can get worse) his two best friends.
  8. It’s downright amazing how playing a few rounds of Strip Scrabble can spice up an evening.
  9. A family doesn’t always have to be the people who share your bloodline; sometimes, the best families are those we make when we gather together all the people we love.
  10. Learning to trust yourself is usually a lot harder than trusting another person. But both are generally required before finding true love.

Get to Know Author Dr. Suravi Sharma Kumar

Hello readers!
Today joining us for an interview is Dr. Suravi Sharma Kumar!
I hope you will extend her a warm welcome.
She is here to answer a few questions and also talk to us about her book, Voices in the Valley.
So, Dr. Kumar, please tell us about your book...
Voices in the Valley is a literary fiction set in the troubled state of Assam in the north-east of India.
It’s a collective biography of the main character and a few others connected to her life. Besides the story line of the protagonist Millie - a feminist trapped in orthodoxy, there are a few themes to the book – the unexplored beauty of this valley of rain forests and sundry orchids, myriad ethnic flavors of a land home to hundreds of tribes, people of various castes and religious beliefs.
Who or what inspires your writing?
I’ve always been fascinated by the world of literature. I used to read a lot ever since my high school days and started writing articles, short stories in school and college magazines and then in newspapers. I wrote health related articles in The Hindu and wrote a regular light read column for the New Indian Express.
And, it just happened that one fine day I started scribbling the story that had been brewing in my mind for years.
When did you know you would be a writer?
I and my parents always believed that I have acumen for literature. After the completion of my years in medical school, I found some time and mental energy to write what I wanted to.
How long did it take you to write your first novel?
As a doctor turned author, it took me more than three whole years to complete the manuscript.
What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Hardest part was keeping focused on my writing in spite of family responsibilities and my job.
Do you have any writing rituals?
I’ve none. When I write I do it all day and do the rest of the work snatching some time out of writing.
Have you written anything else?
Yes, articles and columns for newspapers and magazines. This is my first full length writing.
Any advice to aspiring writers?
Write your stories if it is your passion. Otherwise, you will only isolate yourself from your near and dear ones. I also believe that besides being an entertaining read, a work of fiction should carry an inherent message to the society.
Who are your favorite authors?
Salman Rushdie, Jhumpa Lahiri, Arvind Adiga and Dorris Lessing.
What are your favorite books or which book has impacted you the most?
My favorite books are – Mid Night Children, The Grass is Singing, The White Tiger. The Mid Night Children has impacted me the most.
What are you currently reading?
I am currently reading Fifty Shades of Grey and also doing some writing.
How can readers find out more about you?
I am on Facebook and Twitter where the readers can interact with me and get to know me better.

MY OPINION:
I'm a little let down.
When I read the description for the book I got excited with the idea of a person having the ability to cross over between the living and dead. I thought it would make for an interesting book.
To be honest I had to push myself through this one. Not for lack of writing skill, but the story was just all over the place for me. I still can't formulate whether it's because I didn't read her previous book, or because it really was that confusing, but I am left unsatisfied.
Bummer too because I had high hopes.
There's always people out there that will disagree with me, but this is just what I took from it.

#85: Phoenix Street People: Summer 2012 - Yucel Yalim

(Affiliate link)

Photo essay inquiry into people walking the streets of Phoenix, Arizona during summer days where temperatures exceed 110 degrees in the shade.
Portion of all net proceeds will directly benefit street people.
Over 100 photos in 132 pages including editorial comments and insights into the lives of America’s street people.
In images and words, we can see, if we look, they are us.
Yucel Yalim is an award winning professional photographer currently residing in Phoenix, Arizona.
  • Kindle Size: 6027 KB
  • Print Length: 132 pages
  • ASIN: B008JAW4WU
MY OPINION:
Powerful!
There is one shot in particular, of a man relaxing in the shade with his bible on his chest. The face of this man spoke volumes to me, and I choked back tears.
Everyone in this book had a near effect on me, though different as well in their own ways. It was nice to read where the photographer/author was and the backstory behind the photos, but in actuality, some didn't need words. They hit you right away.
Some fantastic photography of an ever-growing problem across the world, not just America. Though I am happy with the author/photographer bringing recognition to the problem growing in a place you just don't hear about. You hear about places like L.A and New York, not Phoenix.
Definitely not a book for the faint-of-heart, it will tug at your heart and your conscience.

My Review of Pirate Wench Costume

MY OPINION:
Whether you're looking for something for Halloween or you have a costume party to attend, Anytimecostumes.com really has all your needs. And I mean all! Plus the shipping is quick and painless, so you can rest assured to get it promptly and in good wear.
So, last time I went Pirate..... ahoy, mateys!!! But this time I wanted something a little more sexy, for adult functions instead of a suit geared for handing out candy to the kiddies.... and here is what I chose.
Okay, right away you will notice slight changes in my outfit, as well as the photo not being full length. Well, I'm a size 6, but closer to 6ft than 5ft, so when I got a medium, based on the size chart, I ended up with short legs. Hey, it's a lesson learned.... I know now that I need a large just for my legs. Also missing is the strip that goes across the chest. I removed it, obviously, it felt uncomfortable and restricting. Without it I was great and it still looked sexy!
So with that bad stuff said first, I would still not go anywhere else for my costume needs, and have recommended Anytimecostumes.com to a couple people just this week. I really am impressed with the quality of the costumes. This leopard one is so soft... I want to be rubbed in it... oh, that sounds a little dirty, but what the hell!?
So anytime you need a costume, even for your pet, check out this site first! Really, what do you have to lose? Just remember, if you are over 5'5, order a large.

#84: The Serpent's Bite - Warren Adler (With Giveaway)

(Affiliate link)

''How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child'' --King Lear, William Shakespeare This famed quote by William Shakespeare finds its modern meaning in this taut, fast-paced, remarkable novel by renowned author Warren Adler. The Serpent's Bite will take you on a frightening horse trek through the far reaches of the Yellowstone wilderness that turns a father s quest to deal with parental guilt and reunite with his two adult children into a nightmare of lust, betrayal, entrapment, and death. Beyond the revelations of dark family secrets, readers will discover how an obsession for celebrity and blind ambition can distort familial love and turn a beloved child into a grotesque monster. Courtney Temple is sure to be judged as one of those most evil women in fiction, alongside the likes of Lady Macbeth, Medea, and the Wicked Witch of the West. Adler's latest novel takes its place next to the iconic The War of the Roses, in which the author exposed the true nature of marital dysfunction.

  • Hardcover: 320 pages
  • Publisher: Stonehouse Press (September 4, 2012)
  • ISBN: 9781590060445
AUTHOR BIO:
Warren Adler is a world-renowned novelist, short-story writer, poet, and playwright. Over the past forty years the prolific writer has published nearly three dozen books and more than a third of them have been sold to Hollywood. His most famous book, The War of the Roses, a masterpiece fictionalization of the ugliest divorce ever, was turned into a box office hit starring Danny DeVito, Michael Douglas, and Kathleen Turner. Random Hearts, starring Harrison Ford, was a major motion picture, and The Sunset Gang was a PBS trilogy. His books have been translated into twenty-five languages and have been reviewed or featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan, Newsweek, Variety, Glamour, Washington Post, W, Time, Rolling Stone, Gannett News Service, and the Hollywood Reporter. He has also appeared on the Today Show and Good Morning America. Adler writes several times a week for The Huffington Post. He resides in Manhattan and can be found at warrenadler.com.

MY OPINION:
First I have to say I enjoyed both The War of the Roses and The Tie That Binds, but the dark nature of the latter attracted me more. This book is dark and twisted like it, but in a different way.
I loved 99% of it.
It was the very last page I hated. Yup. Total WTF!!
So I will keep in my memory the 99% and make my own last page....
Suspense seekers that like little sick and demented twists, this is for you....

My Review of Initiation (Book 1)

My Review:
Oh, this is a good book.... even more so than the first, though you can't have one without the other.... The first introduces you to the cast and the second gets you into their lives.
I had a feeling things would turn out the way they did in the end, and it didn't bother me, I actually was more happy I was right. Usually it doesn't work out that way, but in this book it did. It also built up the suspense for the next book too, which I can't wait to read....
I do think you could read this book if you haven't read the first, only because it touches base with it and is more of an academic adventure. I do think you should read the first one though as you get a real sense of the characters and their powers.
A great series for the imagination!

Madeleine flinched, thinking again of little Cooper, but she would never tell Chloe about him.
"I say, you are the last, yanh?" Chloe said, and she was watching with a fixed stare.
Madeleine nodded.

#82: Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins

(Affiliate link)

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

My review of book 1, The Hunger Games

My Opinion:
I'm on the edge of a cliff right now, so will be immediately continuing onto book 3 after this.
Poor Katniss!
For someone that didn't sign up for the position she's been stuck in, she sure holds her own. So strong, smart and resourceful, it seems she can get through anything. My heart still hurts for her though, knowing this shouldn't be happening to her. But then again, I am cheering her on all the while hoping she kicks some major butt!
Ok, so like the rest of the world, I saw the movie when it came out. And now I am dying to see this one. Sucks it doesn't come till next year though, and I'm not looking forward to a certain part with Cinna. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Lenny Kravitz!
Anyway, if you are the last person on earth to hear about this series, or just haven't the cash flow to get it, I highly suggest requesting it for a birthday gift or something. It's totally worth it!

A fun, quirky, beach summer read by Twilight Times Books!

Daniella is an architecture student living with her narcissistic artist boyfriend in San Juan. Abandoned by her father at an early age, Daniella always falls for the ‘wrong’ type of man. Her most enduring male relationship so far has been with her cat.

Several strange mysteries are threaded through Daniella’s everyday life: her ex-husband, Ismael, has just opened an outlandish hotel for animal lovers that has her distraught; Ismael’s wife, a rich woman Daniella fondly refers to as ‘Lady Dracula’, has some gruesome ways to keep her skin looking young; Daniella’s mother is founding a revolutionary, feminist society called The Praying Mantises; the island’s national forest is being depleted of hallucinogenic mushrooms; meanwhile, young girls are disappearing and there’s a nut loose dressed as Zorro slashing the rear ends of women who wear miniskirts.

Oppressed by all these eccentric characters, Daniella feels herself falling into an abyss. Then something terrible happens, making Daniella wake from her stupor and take charge of her life.

Promo Stop: Quarantine - Lex Thomas

(Affiliate Link)
It was just another ordinary day at McKinley High—until a massive explosion devastated the school. When loner David Thorpe tried to help his English teacher to safety, the teacher convulsed and died right in front of him. And that was just the beginning.

A year later, McKinley has descended into chaos. All the students are infected with a virus that makes them deadly to adults. The school is under military quarantine. The teachers are gone. Violent gangs have formed based on high school social cliques. Without a gang, you’re as good as dead. And David has no gang. It’s just him and his little brother, Will, against the whole school.

In this frighteningly dark and captivating novel, Lex Thomas locks readers inside a school where kids don’t fight to be popular, they fight to stay alive.
