Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations.
First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both
Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking
all standards of social etiquette.
Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.
With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?
SOULLESS is a comedy of manners set in Victorian London: full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

New York Times Bestselling author Gail Carriger writes to cope with being raised in obscurity by an expatriate Brit and an incurable curmudgeon. She escaped small town life and inadvertently acquired several degrees in Higher Learning. Ms. Carriger then traveled the historic cities of Europe, subsisting entirely on biscuits secreted in her handbag. She resides in the Colonies, surrounded by fantastic shoes, where she insists on tea imported from London.
The Parasol Protectorate books are: Soulless, Changeless, Blameless, Heartless, and Timeless. Soulless won the ALA's Alex Award. A manga version was released March 2012 and a manga of the second book is due out Winter 2012. She is currently writing young adult books set in the same universe ~ the Finishing School series (Feb. 5, 2013). Soon she will begin a new adult series, The Parasol Protectorate Abroad (for Fall 2013).
My Opinion:
Even though it was funny from the start, with Alexia and her sarcasm, I wasn't into it. I kept reading, and it did get a lot better. So much so I couldn't put it down.
The romance was more exciting for me than the suspense, but I enjoyed it as well. I think the relationship between Lord Maccon and Alexia is more intriguing because of the carnal desires that neither can seem to control, no matter how hard they both try. And believe me, they do try.
I am looking forward to the next book, and looking forward to continue reading about Alexia. I really enjoy a strong female character, and she fits the bill perfectly.
