#94: First Grave on the Right - Darynda Jones

Synopsis & Book Info:
Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

My Opinion:
Due to it being an audiobook, I felt I missed little things along the way, but I caught enough to like it and want to find a print or ebook.
The narrator was easy enough to listen to, but when I read a book in print, it's like my mind eats the words up.
I LOVED Cookie, the friend. Anyone that is reminiscent of Kramer, from Seinfeld, is cool to me.
And the guy she sleeps with... well, I wish I could tell you... but I won't. It's hot though, maybe too hot.
This was a really fun book. Audio or not.
I definitely think paranormal romance fans will enjoy this one. Though it is really light on the romance and heavy on the paranormal.

Stephen Zimmer's Third Rising Dawn Saga Book Unveiled With Limited Edition Hardcover Offer!

Seventh Star Press is proud to unveil the title and brand new cover art
for Stephen Zimmer's third Rising Dawn Saga novel: The Seventh Throne.

A bold, ambitious series that pushes the boundaries of urban fantasy, The
Rising Dawn Saga has gained a steadily growing, very dedicated following
since the debut of The Exodus Gate in spring of 2009. Showing the
epic-scale possibilities of urban fantasy, the series draws heavily upon
mythical and supernatural lore, weaving it into a modern day tale of a
world tilting swiftly towards a dystopian nightmare.

Readers who have been journeying along in the Rising Dawn Saga will need
to hold on to their seat, as a conflict of cosmic scope escalates rapidly.
They will join the human soul Friedrich as he accompanies the powerful
Avatar Enki into the depth of the Abyss, to discover the fate of
Erishkegal, who crossed the Veil to spare a horde of outcast Nephilim ages
ago. It is a quest that will take them to the brink of hell itself, but
it is one that may hold astounding revelations.

Elsewhere, martial law is installed across the UCAS during the outbreak of
a deadly virus, and the onset of a war to the far east that threatens the
stability of the entire world. The imposition of a diabolical technology
looms, as centuries-old organizations in the service of Adonai race to
confront the looming menace.

Gregory Andreas, an ex-marine, leads a budding resistance to the
authoritarian government, as Dagian Underwood, the mastermind behind the
oncoming Living ID technology, reaches out to the dark realm of Set to
gain the help of an ally with a rare, formidable ability. Seth Engel and
his teenaged friends venture forth once again to seek proof of spreading
rumors; this time of rounded-up townspeople being herded into large
detainment facilities close to Godwinton.

Even the shapeshifting An-Ki are caught in the maelstrom of uncertainty,
as Godral and their others of Sargor's clan struggle to find their place
in the strange modern world, and Uria leads his renegade new clan into the
unknown. His path leads to an encounter with a mysterious individual
possessed of supernatural powers; who expresses the desire to be his
guide.

Threads intertwine as the dangers increase, and nowhere is safe as the
things of the material and non-material worlds clash. The Seventh Throne
will leave the reader hungry for the next installment, after a revelation
of tremendous magnitude culminates the latest Rising Dawn Saga adventure.

"I am very excited about this installment, as with three books out in the
Rising Dawn Saga I can really show readers how I build a series," Stephen
Zimmer commented. "Everything builds, and threads that may have seemed
ambiguous in the earlier books pay off in droves. For the dedicated
reader, I have worked hard to bring a level of range and depth that can be
explored again and again."

As with the previous Rising Dawn Saga books, readers can expect another
full set of Matthew Perry illustrations, with eight brand new ones
included in the regular edition of the book. The extensive Matthew Perry
body of artwork produced for The Rising Dawn Saga is, without a doubt,
highly unique in the publishing of fantasy works today, regardless of
major press or small press classification.

A pre-ordering window is now open for readers interested in a limited
edition hardcover of The Seventh Throne, which features a Matthew Perry
illustration not included in the regular edition. Only 75 numbered/signed
copies of the limited edition will be issued, at a price of just $35.95.

There is also a special pre-order offer for the regular trade paperback
edition. Both of the pre-order offers include an array of collectibles
from The Seventh Throne. Copies can be pre-ordered in the online store at
http://www.seventhstarpress.com/documents/books.html and all pre-ordered
packages will be shipped no later than August 16th.

The Seventh Throne will ultimately be available in trade paperback,
hardcover, and a variety of eBook editions.

Updates and additional information can be obtained at the official site
for Seventh Star Press, at www.seventhstarpress.com , or at the author's
site at www.stephenzimmer.com

#93: Men and Their Childish Games - Jessica V.

Synopsis & Book Info:
Author, Jessica V. says "You have heard these stories from your friends, and perhaps experienced some of your own. This minimally edited, non-fiction book is written in a diary form portraying both on and offline dating experiences of a young single professional female living and working in NYC. These childish men range from flakey, to naked pix texters and stalkers to straight guys with homosexual tendencies and then some. As you hop on this emotional roller coaster of a read, you'll be sure to laugh, nod and more! My goal is for you to learn from the countless mistakes I made and be wise enough not to fall into the numerous traps I was deceived into.

My Opinion:
Right away I gotta say to Jessica.... stop using online dating services. That might clear up your man drama. You should try meeting a guy the traditional way, so sparks can fly, then you might have better chances of not snagging a loser.
Sorry, I really had to get that out.
This book was filled with all of Jessica's mishaps with men an dating. While I found it to be fun in parts, to read, it wasn't stuff that I didn't know from general life experience any way. Just reading about it was a little monotonous too, since you heard it all before from friends... family... whomever is dating right now.
Just didn't thrill me. There was nothing that stood out. It was just general dating and what happens in and around it.

Get to Know Christy Hayes

Let's give a warm welcome to Christy Hayes, author of Angle of Incidence. Please check out her website in this post, and let me know what you think of it when you are done.

1. Please tell readers about your current book.
Frist of all, thank you, Freda, for having me! My latest book is called ANGLE OF INCIDENCE. Gwen Perry has the picture perfect life. Her Washington D.C. based photography business is booming, her husband Rob’s law career is lucrative, and after years of trying, they're only a few months away from the birth of their first child. But when fate intervenes Gwen is left childless and feeling betrayed by her husband. When her college friend and fellow photographer invites her to join him at the photography retreat he's leading, Gwen agrees to go to Colorado despite the consequences to her marriage. But Rob’s not the only one with secrets from the past and her trip down memory lane could burn the bridge leading her back home.

2. Who or what inspires your writing?
I like to read about interesting characters I can relate to and what happens to them when various situations arise. I tend to write what I like to read. I’m a big believer in marriage, especially in this day and age when people seem to think it is a temporary arrangement. Finding someone to marry is the easy part. Making a marriage last is what takes work.

3. When did you know you would be a writer?
I started writing when my youngest child went to school after I’d read a book and thought, I can do better than that. I majored in journalism in college so I’ve always had an interest.

4. How long did it take you to write your first novel?
My first novel took probably 9 months to finish. It is terrible and will never leave my hard drive, but finishing a book taught me discipline and led me to educate myself about the craft.

5. What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Right now it is finding time to sit down and write when my kids are out of school. Normally, it is coming up with a plot that is realistic and yet keeps the reader turning pages.

6. Do you have any writing rituals?
Not really. If I get stuck, I’ll read a craft book to help get the creative juices flowing. Exercise really helps, too.

7. Have you written any thing else?
I have five books for sale at Smashwords, Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com.

8. Any advice to aspiring writers?
Be patient. Learn the craft. Read a lot. Finish the book and then start another. People who see writing as a quick and easy way to make a buck are going to be very disappointed. You have to love what you do because you probably aren’t going to make a lot of money. Success comes from accomplishment, not dollar signs.

9. Who are your favorite Authors?

Tough question. Maggie O’Farrell, Marisa de los Santos, Nora Roberts, Joshilyn Jackson to name a few.

10. What are your favorite books, or which book has impacted you the most?
I don’t know that there is any one book that influenced me the most, except maybe some excellent craft books by Sol Stein and Donald Maass. I love that there are so many books to choose from in so many varied genres. I used to be a TV junkie, but reading is so much better. Other than the news, I barely turn the TV on anymore.

11. What are you currently reading?
I just finished ACCORDING TO JANE by Marilyn Brant. I’m in the middle of ALICE I HAVE BEEN by Melanie Benjamin.

12. How do readers find out more about you?
http://www.christyhayes.com is my website. I donate half of all proceeds to the organizations listed on my site as a way of giving back.
The reading community is such a happy place filled with the most interesting people. I’m blessed that you asked me to be a part of such a vibrant group. I encourage your followers to take a look at my website and leave a message if they feel compelled. I’d love to hear from them!

Gwen Perry has the picture perfect life. Her photography business is booming, her husband Rob’s law career is lucrative, and after years of trying, they’re only a few months away from the birth of their first child. But fate intervenes and Gwen loses her baby and any chance of having children. Devastated, angry, and on the verge of depression, Gwen tries to deal with the pain of losing their son.
Gwen’s grief seems boundless and despite his best attempts, Rob is unable to reach her, to share her pain, to share their loss. But he is walking a dangerous tight rope; he’s hiding something from his wife that could destroy their marriage. Rob’s fourteen-year-old son, the baby he gave up for adoption, the son his wife knows nothing about, has come searching for answers. Rob never lied to his wife…not really. With every passing year, it became more impossible to confess the secret he’d also managed to keep from his parents. But even the deepest secrets won’t stay buried forever.
Gwen is stunned to learn Rob has a child. When Rob’s parents hear the news, including his gift of music, Rob’s mother is beyond excited to have a grandchild, especially one who inherited her musical talents. His father is furious at Rob for giving up his only chance to have a child. His mother’s elation, his father’s fury, and Rob’s indifference leave Gwen feeling hollow and empty. She agrees to join her college friend at the artists’ retreat he’s leading in Colorado despite the consequences to her marriage and all the things she’ll dredge up from the past.
When Gwen announces she’s going across the country to be with Justin Rappaport, of all people, Rob believes Gwen is taking the first step in ending their marriage. He watches her walk away from their life feeling utterly helpless to stop her. While she’s gone, he is forced to adjust to life without her and struggles to handle the household responsibilities he has always taken for granted.
At the retreat, Gwen tries to rediscover her love of photography and attempts to heal her wounds. She bonds with a female college student and faces another challenge when the girl turns to her for advice. Helping her sort through her options forces Gwen to reexamine what she wants out of life and her relationship with Rob. While constantly fending off Justin’s flirtations, Gwen is thrust back into their shared past--a past she thought she’d buried, a past that could uproot the foundation of her marriage.
Rob is going out of his mind with worry. The retreat doesn't have cell coverage, and the distance he hears in Gwen’s tone when they do manage to connect isn't helping. Desperate for a way to reconcile with his wife, Rob is forced to email her and, much to his dismay, he’s unable to hide his frustration with her leaving and his desperate need to have her back. He tries to be understanding, but he doesn’t trust Justin. Can Rob win back his wife before Justin tears them apart?

Get to Know Author Mark O'Bannon

Let's give a warm welcome to Mark O'Bannon, author of The Dream Crystal. Please check out his links in this post, and let me know what you think of them when you are done.

1. Please tell readers about your current book.
The Dream Crystal is a fantasy tale about a faerie changeling who decides to rescue the human child she was exchanged for.

2. Who or what inspires your writing?
The best inspiration for me comes from reading or seeing a great story. Also, I enjoy taking historical settings and making them magical. So in my first series of books (which are about fairies), I’ve taken traditional Irish mythology and mixed it with a modern fantasy tale. If you look up some of the names of the characters in my books, you may find them! But there are some spoilers, so do so with caution.

3. When did you know you would be a writer?
I’m a computer technician. One day I asked another tech a question and he looked at me and said, “Mark, you should know the answer to these things. If you don’t have passion for your work, you’ll never go as far as you want to go.” I went home depressed, wondering what I would do with my life. Then I looked up at my bookshelf and started counting the number of books I’ve read (and re-read) on writing. I have nearly 200 books! I had also written 3 or 4 million words worth of stories for fun. That was the moment I realized that I was a writer.

4. How long did it take you to write your first novel?
Many people think that a writer just sits down and turns out a story. This isn’t how it works. Like learning the piano or art or anything, writing takes passion, practice and study. Even Mozart had to learn how to play the piano. I spent over 30 years telling stories, 15 years learning how to write, and 10 years writing for fun before I set out to write my first novel.
Once I started, it took me about a year to design the story, another year to write it and another six months or so before I learned how to market it. Today, I’m much faster. My next book, “The Dark Mirrors of Heaven” took me a month to design, and it should take me one or two months to write. Future books should take less and less time as I get better. My goal is to write a novel every month or two.

5. What is the hardest part of writing for you?
I have a t-shirt that has an image of a “Distractasaurus” – Distractions kill my writing. Also, life stress kills my creativity and saps my ability to write. I do the most work when I’m on vacation, sitting on the beach in Thailand. I need to go on vacation more often so I can get more work done! Maybe I’ll just move there!

6. Do you have any writing rituals?
I like to feed my muse with a steady diet of books, movies and poetry. I listen to music while writing (nothing with lyrics though). I also make sure I get the story structure figured out in advance so I won’t have to spend hours and hours and hours of rewriting. I like to get it right the first time. I still do rewrites but once I get the structure figured out, there isn’t too much to fix in later drafts.

7. Have you written anything else?
I have a ton of unpublished short stories. Perhaps 3 or 4 million words worth.
I wrote an Interactive Storytelling Game (a “Pen and Paper” Role-Playing Game), called, “Fantasy Imperium.” It sold out in two years (5000 copies). I plan on republishing it in the future as I have the time.

8. Any advice to aspiring writers?
Here are the three most important things you need to know:
The Premise.
99% of writers fail at the premise – the story idea. Either the idea has been done before (clichĂ©), or it’s a bad idea (is it fundamentally stupid?), or it’s a good idea which hasn’t been developed properly.
So make certain your story concept is unique, and that it can build into something interesting. Is your idea only good for a few scenes? The genre you choose for your story will to a large extent determine how well it can be developed. Every genre explores something different. Fantasy explores how to live a good life. Mystery is about the search for truth. Horror deals with what is human and what is inhuman, etc. If you use the wrong genre to develop your story, you could kill it (though it’s perfectly fine to try it).
Write a Thousand Words a Day.
Here’s what Ray Bradbury told me: “Write a thousand words a day and in three years you’ll be a writer… because nobody can write that many bad stories in a row.” If you want to be a great musician, if you want to be a great artist, if you want to be a great ball player, if you want to be a great writer, you need to practice, practice, practice! Nobody can play a fantastic piece of music the first time they touch an instrument.
Study Writing.
Most people refuse to study writing. But can you imagine sitting down at a piano and composing a masterpiece at the first try? This is impossible. You must study writing. Most writing books (I’ve read everything it seems) are good, but you should definitely learn story structure.
Stay away from the obsolete Three Act Structure system. Using this outdated system is like giving crayons to Michelangelo.
Use the Seven Steps of Classical Story Structure taught by John Truby.
Here are the top three books on writing:
“The Anatomy of Story” by John Truby.
“Zen and the Art of Writing” by Ray Bradbury.
“Writing the Breakout Novel” by Donald Maass.
Get everything by Writer’s Digest Books. “Conflict Action and Suspense” is one of the best.
You can also read my blog on writing: http://www.BetterStorytelling.Net/Blog
I wrote a free e-book called, “How to Tell a Story” (you can find it on my blog) and this will give you a basic idea of how storytelling works.

9. Who is your favorite Authors?
Ray Bradbury, J.K. Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien.

10. What is your favorite book?
All the Harry Potter books. (J.K.Rowling really needs to write more books, don’t you think?)

11. What are you currently reading?
I’m always on the lookout for new books on writing. Donald Maass wrote a new one: “The Fire in Fiction,” which I’ll get next. I always keep “The Anatomy of Story” nearby, and I’m rereading Harry Potter again! I also want to read Amanda Hocking’s book, “Switched.”

12. How do readers find out more about you?

Thanks for the interest in my books.
If you want to learn writing, I’ll be happy to help you (just go to my blog).
I plan on writing six fairy novels and 24 novellas (about fairies – aren’t you sick of reading zombie/vampire/werewolf books?). Then I may get into Science Fiction.

All of the world’s dreams are about to die. The Shadow People have come. Always near, they linger in the darkness, ready to devour dreams, hopes, aspirations and desires. . .
Aisling, having lost her dream of becoming a fashion designer, learns that she’s a Faerie changeling. Disquieted by the fact that her faerie parents are kidnappers, she has decided to rescue the human child she was exchanged for, but her “sister” is no longer among the faeries, having been taken by the Shadow People. Ith, the Lord of Shadows, is trying to control the dreams of mankind, which are under the protection of the faeries, so they’re at war.
Aisling, who doesn’t believe in dreams any longer, is falling in love with a handsome, mysterious stranger – one of the Shadow People.

#91: Tabloid City - Pete Hamill

Synopsis & Book Info:
In a stately West Village townhouse, a wealthy socialite and her secretary are murdered. In the 24 hours that follow, a flurry of activity circles around their shocking deaths: The head of one of the city's last tabloids stops the presses. A cop investigates the killing. A reporter chases the story. A disgraced hedge fund manager flees the country. An Iraq War vet seeks revenge. And an angry young extremist plots a major catastrophe.
The City is many things: a proving ground, a decadent playground, or a palimpsest of memories-- a historic metropolis eclipsed by modern times. As much a thriller as it is a gripping portrait of the city of today, TABLOID CITY is a new fiction classic from the writer who has captured it perfectly for decades.

My Opinion:
This is one of those books that takes a minute to get into. The story doesn't come together right away, because it is told in different perspectives by different people. It reminded me of Six Degrees of Separation in how it came about.
The one thing I didn't understand why it was even there was the terrorist thing. Could have just opted that out of the whole book.
Some people will really enjoy this crafty number, but others I don't think will even get it. I can only suggest you get a copy and see for yourself.

My Opinion:
Be prepared for the action to start off immediately! It doesn't stop all the way through either.
I loved the suspense aspect of the book, much more than the erotically hot romance. And man, it was hot!
There was a creepy factor throughout the whole story that I loved, but I got to admit, I figured out pretty early who the bad guy was.
That aside, I loved this book!
Looking for to the next in the series.

INTERVIEW TIME!

What draws you to historical/biblical fiction?

I have always adored history, a love I inherited from my father. He used to discuss people from history as if they were people in the current newspapers. I think almost 90% of my books must have an historical setting.

You’ve had a successful career writing for the ABA, why start writing for the CBA now?
A few years ago I had an extraordinary experience where God touched my life. This encounter stirred my interest in writing about other people who had experienced the presence of God in their lives and the CBA seemed to be the best place for me to do that.

What is it about the historical account of Esther that led you to write a romance story about her?
When I was a girl Esther fascinated me. It seemed wonderful that God had chosen a woman to be the person who would save His people. And, since I am a romantic soul, I also thought that there must have been a great love between her and the king for him to have done as she asked.

Why did you move away from the traditional interpretation of King Ahasuerus’ conduct?
I always thought that Ahasuerus must have loved Esther deeply because he listened to her and revoked the edict that Haman had sent out. A king who not only allows his wife to break into his religious feast without punishment, but also comes to have dinner with her the following day, must care for her very much indeed. And such a man must be a much nicer person than the king traditionally portrayed by Xerses/ Ahasuerus.

You love animals. Do you ever incorporate them into your books?

Do I not ever incorporate animals into my books? I am famous for my horses, but dogs play their part as well. Unfortunately, I couldn’t put Esther on a horse, but I did make Ahasuerus a fanatical horseman.

What is your favorite historical era to write about?
I love to go way back in time, to periods where the records are mostly archeological. I actually did three books set in the Upper Paleolithic, the period of the last ice age. My next book is about Rahab, and I’m having such fun reading about pottery and stone remains from the late Bronze Age.

My Opinion:
I wish I was Esther.
Strong, beautiful, courageous, intelligent, and honest. Such great morality and character that I want to know more about the "real" Esther.
I loved how this book flowed, and I read it pretty quick too, not just because of the great writing but also the fantastic story told.
Even if you don't know about these biblical people, you can easily fall into the story.
A definite book for my must-read list!

My Opinion:
First off, I got to admit, I had no idea this was book 4 in a series! It didn't matter any way, I was still able to delve deep into the story and not feel lost at all.
I really like Caleb! Out of all the characters, he stood out most to me. I really hope there will be more of his character in books to come. He was strong, sensitive and sexy, three things every girl wants in a man.
The cat and mouse relationship they had in the beginning was a lot of fun too! I am glad they caught one another though.
A lot of bloggers I know are going to love this book!
