#38: Rock Bottom - Erin Brockovich & C.J Lyons

Synopsis & Book Info:
From New York Times bestselling author and internationally renowned environmental and consumer advocate Erin Brockovich, comes Rock Bottom, a debut thriller and first in a series of novels that introduces one of the most fascinating and memorable characters in suspense fiction.
Ten years ago, Angela Joy Palladino left home as a pregnant seventeen-year-old in trouble. Far from home, AJ succeeded in establishing her career as an environmental activist, dubbed "The People's Champion," only to suffer failure once again in the wake of a crushing media disaster.
So when AJ is offered a job with a lawyer who has taken on large mining corporations hoping to stop their mountaintop removal of her hometown, she is torn. As a single mother of a special needs nine-year-old boy, AJ needs any work she can get. But doing so will mean returning to the West Virginia hometown she left in disgrace so long ago.
AJ finally accepts, hoping to find a sense of purpose in her efforts to save the only place she ever called home. That is until threats begin to surface and bodies begin to pile up, and AJ soon discovers her own secrets aren't the only ones her mountain hometown has kept buried. Hitting rock bottom, AJ must face the betrayal of those once closest to her and confront the harrowing past she thought she had left behind.
In Rock Bottom, Erin Brockovich combines passionate intensity, first-rate story-telling, and her real-life experiences in a novel that will leave you breathless.

My Opinion:
If you enjoyed the movie, then you will definitely enjoy this book. The movie based on Erin, is no where near as exciting as this book. But that's how fiction should be.
Mystery, intrigue, murder, and all the best aspects of a thriller are present in this story, with extremely strong characters, that I found to be well-rounded and fresh.
On a personal note, I loved the reference to the Canadian Football League too, but you'd have to read the book to see what I mean.

My Opinion:
My son really though this was a cool comic book, though he said he wished it was longer. He is 15.
I, on the other hand, only appreciated the ending for the most part. I did enjoy the illustration and attention to details too. But the story was just meh, and I agree with my son, it was short.
So it will flip some and not others.

#36: Ten Little Zombies: A Love Story - Andy Rash

Synopsis & Book Info:
When being chased by ten little zombies (no matter how cute they are), your only option is to systematically destroy them one by one, or else become zombie number eleven. In this love story wrapped in a tale of zombie mayhem, a resourceful couple flees from and picks off their undead pursuers with fast-paced ingenuity and an entertaining range of zombie-thwarting tools. As the zombies shuffle and stumble their way toward a variety of gruesome ends, our heroes must come up with new ways to escape sticky situations and stay together. This darkly funny illustrated tale think Bunny Suicides meets Edward Gorey meets Hallmark celebrates the romantic side of a zombie plague, with plenty of BRAINS and a lot of heart.

#35: Coming Back Stronger - Drew Brees

Synopsis & Book Info:
When a potentially career-ending shoulder injury left quarterback Drew Brees without a team—and facing the daunting task of having to learn to throw a football all over again—coaches around the NFL wondered, Will he ever come back? After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, leaving more than 80 percent of the city underwater, many wondered, Will the city ever come back? And with their stadium transformed into a makeshift refugee camp, forcing the Saints to play their entire 2005 season on the road, people questioned, Will the Saints ever come back? It takes a special person to turn adversity into success and despair into hope—yet that is exactly what Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees has done—and with the weight of an entire city on his shoulders. Coming Back Stronger is the ultimate comeback story, not only of one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, but also of a city and a team that many had all but given up on. Brees’s inspiring message of hope and encouragement proves that with enough faith, determination, and heart, you can overcome any obstacle life throws your way and not only come back, but come back stronger.

Hardcover: 336 pages
Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers
ISBN: 9781414339436
Purchase at Amazon

Author Bio:
Drew Brees is the 2009 Super Bowl MVP–winning quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. A 2001 graduate of Purdue University, Drew was a two–time Heisman finalist and led the Boilermakers to a Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl appearance during the 2000 season.
In Drew's five years with the San Diego Chargers and four years with the New Orleans Saints, he has been elected to four Pro Bowls while being named 2004 Comeback Player of the Year, 2006 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, and 2008 NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
On February 7, 2010, he led the Saints to their first World Championship against the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, completing a record thirty–two passes on his way to being named Super Bowl MVP.
As much pride as Drew takes in his on-field performance, he takes even more pride in his community service endeavors. Drew and his wife, Brittany, established the Brees Dream Foundation in 2003 and since then have raised and/or committed more than $5 million to help advance cancer research; improve care for cancer patients; and help rebuild schools, parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields in New Orleans, San Diego, and the Purdue community.
A native of Austin, Texas, Drew currently lives with his wife, Brittany, and son, Baylen, in New Orleans.

©2010

My Opinion:
This is a book, not only about a Superbowl Champion Quarterback, but a story about perseverance. A story about wanting one thing one day, and realizing you meant for something greater.
I knew of Drew Brees when I got the book, I only knew he was the QB that took New Orleans to the Superbowl and won. Heck, I watched the game and cheered him on. But I had no idea the life he lived to lead him to that point, nor how significant that moment he raised his son above his head when he won, would turn out to be.
The only way I would know was reading this book, and based on that, I urge you to do the same.

I'm positive some one, some where, will disagree, but I was so bored by this book. It was almost painful how textbook-like it was. Now when you think about that, would you go back and read your history textbook from high school? Probably not. That's exactly what it felt like for me reading this.
The content was another story.
It was decent, relevant and even educational, but like I said, the way it was laid out is hard to get past.

My Opinion:
This is a chunkster, at 700 pages. Yet it wasn't overwhelming at all.
This story was very charming, and what my hubby would label as chick lit. Definitely for girls and boys wouldn't really relate to it.
It's about four sisters, and each one of them is someone you can relate to. Either you were her, or know her, or want to be her. They each have attributes that you love and hate which makes them feel alive when you read it.
I related most to Laurel, one of the middle children. But that isn't to say I didn't feel some connection to all the other girls.
A really great and family oriented read! I think young girls will eat it right up!

#32: A Tiny Bit Marvellous - Dawn French

Synopsis & Book Info:
Everyone hates the perfect family. So you’ll love the Battles. Mo is about to hit the big 50, and some uncomfortable truths are becoming quite apparent: She doesn’t understand either of her teenage kids, which as a child psychologist, is fairly embarrassing. She has become entirely grey. Inside, and out. Her face has surrendered and is frightening children. Dora is about to hit the big 18 . . . and about to hit anyone who annoys her, especially her precocious younger brother Peter who has a chronic Oscar Wilde fixation. Then there’s Dad . . . who’s just, well, dad. A TINY BIT MARVELLOUS is the story of a modern family all living in their own separate bubbles lurching towards meltdown. It is for anyone who has ever shared a home with that weird group of strangers we call relations. Oh and there’s a dog. Called Poo.

Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Michael Joseph
ISBN: 9780718157869
Purchase at Amazon

Author Bio:
Dawn French has been making people laugh for thirty years. On purpose. As a writer, comedian and actor, she has appeared in some of this country’s most long running, cherished and celebrated shows, including French and Saunders, The Comic Strip Presents ..., Murder Most Horrid, The Vicar of Dibley, Jam and Jerusalem, Lark Rise to Candleford, and more recently, Roger and Val Have Just Got In. Her bestselling memoir, Dear Fatty, was published to critical acclaim in 2008. This is without a doubt her first novel.

©2010

My Opinion:
I like stories about families, the more dysfunctional the more entertaining. This book didn't lack in either of those departments.
Mo, the mom and main narrator of the book, is one of those women you can't decide if you love or hate her. Her daughter, Dora, is a cheeky flake that you adore. Peter, her son, is a mess and possibly sick in the head. And lastly the hubby, whose name you learn at the very end of the book, is almost invisible yet strikingly prominent all at once!
So many emotions, and yet I'm left feeling just okay about it all. I can't put my finger on anything I hated about the book, but the best part for me was the puppy being named Elvis, so what does that tell you?! It didn't go immensely far. It just was.

#31: The Postcard Killers - James Patterson & Liza Marklund

Synopsis & Book Info:
NYPD detective Jack Kanon is on a tour of Europe's most gorgeous cities. But the sights aren't what draw him--he sees each museum, each cathedral, and each restaurant through a killer's eyes. Kanon's daughter, Kimmy, and her boyfriend were murdered while on vacation in Rome. Since then, young couples in Paris, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, and Stockholm have become victims of the same sadistic killers. Now Kanon teams up with the Swedish reporter, Dessie Larsson. Every killing is preceded by a postcard to the local newspaper--and Kanon and Larsson think they know where the next victims will be.

My Opinion:
Ever read or listen to a book that you found yourself rooting for the bad guys? Well, that's what happened to me with this audiobook. I really enjoyed the killers, and found their characters to be fresh and exciting!
Sylvia is one cool chick! She does have a real problem with authority and takes care of herself in ways no others would think of, like murder.
Jacob, the cop character, he really didn't stand out for me. In his case, it was just another cop to me.
The only thing I didn't care for was the background music and ambiance. It's supposed to add depth and emotion to the scene, but I found it more distracting than anything.
I definitely want to read a print copy, just to get a better appreciation for the story, and who knows, maybe I'll end up liking Jacob more.

But he, David, and Toria are captivated by the many rooms in the old Victorian fixer-upper they moved into--as well as the heavy woods surrounding the house.
They soon discover there's something odd about the house. Sounds come from the wrong directions. Prints of giant, bare feet appear in the dust. And when David tries to hide in the linen closet, he winds up in locker 119 at his new school.
Then the really weird stuff kicks in: they find a hidden hallway with portals leading off to far-off places--in long-ago times. Xander is starting to wonder if this kind of travel is a teen's dream come true . . . or his worst nightmare.

#29: Tattoo's & Tequila - Vince Neil

Synopsis & Book Info:
Like so many rock stars who survive into their 40s, Mötley Crüe front man Neil has produced an autobiography. Raised in Compton, Calif., just as gangs were starting to take over, Neil turned multiracial good looks and a bad attitude into a career singing for the leading hair band of the 1980s. Mötley Crüe embraced the values of rock star excess and garnered fame as much for their drunken exploits as for their music. In one grim episode, an inebriated Neil crashed his Ford Pantera into a Volkswagen, killing his passenger and critically injuring two others. Later, Neil was ejected from the band but eventually returned. Today, he lives in Vegas, making music and running several businesses, including a chain of tattoo parlors. Neil makes no pretense of being thoughtful or reflective, but with Sager's help he's done a more than adequate job of representing himself. Much is said about all the women he's had, all the drugs he's done, all the nice cars he's owned, and all the celebrities he's met. Yet within the rock-star braggadocio lies an entertaining story of a handsome, insecure guy with a lot of energy who got really lucky. Interviews with friends, business associates, and ex-wives bring much-needed depth to the narrative. To his credit, Neil deals honestly with the suffering he's caused.

My Opinion:
Was I ever excited to read this book, being a Motley Crue fan, I was really stoked. Then within 20 pages I was putting the book down, shaking my head, and feeling put off.
Vince really goes nuts bashing Nikki Sixx in the book. He does give in to bashing Tommy and Mick too, but nothing like he does about Nikki.
You know what the real kicker is? Nikki writes a letter, like a few other do in the book, and had nothing but good things to say about Vince.
His attitude was a total let-down for me, and highly unexpected.
I will admit, he has a few good stories to share, and that's where the fun reading comes from, and why I gave it a decent rating.

A Business Plan Is Not The End Of The World with Jennifer Lynne Matthews

Author of Fashion Unraveled

Business plans can be intimidating for anyone, which probably explains why there are thousands of books on how to write one. But do YOU really need one? Answer this question:

Do you sell things you make, resell merchandise you buy or sell your services for a profit?

1. Yes, I make a living doing it.
2. Yes, I’m making some money but I’d like to make a living doing it.
3. Yes, but it’s just a hobby that brings in a little extra cash.
4. No.

If you answered d, please proceed to the next article, I don’t know why you would even be reading about business plans. If you answered a, b or c, well then, we need to talk business plans.

I think the scariest words to an entrepreneur is “business plan,” so let’s make this subject a little less frightening. Here are 5 reasons we use a business plan.

1. Entrepreneurs are creative individuals, and as you may know, creative individuals are highly susceptible to short attention spans and the curse of unending multi-tasking. A business plan keeps these brave souls in check and organized.

2. In the excitement of starting a business, entrepreneurs want to buy anything and everything to get the business going. The business plan makes you lay out your planned expenses so you don’t go bankrupt before you even launch your business.

3. Business plans make us take everything into account and bring everything into perspective. It lays out what you expect to get out of your business, when you expect to see a positive cash flow and how you plan to get your customers?

4. Everyone has a million dollar idea, but how many of those people are able to make a million dollars off of it. With careful budgeting and forecasting, you can see if your million dollar idea is going to be your life force, transform itself into a thousand dollar idea or become the bane of your existence.

5. Because it’s for you and no one else!

The words “business plan” gets the reaction out of most as if someone scratched their fingernails down the chalkboard. But you know what? You can call it something else. Call it your gold plan, your kids college fund or your retirement plan, but for a business to be successful, it is a good idea to create a business plan even if you never show it to anyone but your cat Murray.
