Giveaway: Just Let Me Lie Down

Book description:
Kristin van Ogtrop knows she's lucky--fulfilling career, great husband, three healthy kids, and, depending on the hamster count, an impressive roster of pets. She also knows she is tired. Always.
Using stories and insights from her own life, she provides a lexicon for the half-insane working mom. Anyone who has left a meeting to race to the Halloween parade immediately understands van Ogtrop's definition of "Kill the messenger" as "The action you must take in order to forget about the office for a time--that is, to remove your Blackberry/Treo/iPhone/whatever from your person and store it as far away as your neurotic self will allow." Filled with essays, lists, and resonant observations, JUST LET ME LIE DOWN establishes van Ogtrop as the Erma Bombeck of the new millennium.

My Review:
If you like action-packed, thrilling horror fantasies, then you have to get a copy of this book!
When I first started reading this book, I didn't appreciate the vulgarity, which continued throughout, but immediately was pulled into this story about the Soul Catcher and her Soul Hunter husband. Their journeys through many lifetimes is a great tale, filled with excitement.
The author, now trying her hand at a new pen-name, is a wonderful story-teller. bringing the characters to life so fully at times I was really afraid!
Definitely one I recommend, but not to kids!

My Review:
Even though I didn't start out with the first book in the series, I didn't feel lost. This was a great tale on a classic story with a paranormal twist. I wasn't pulled into the book right away, it actually took a few chapters, but once I got in, I couldn't stop.
I found it interesting how the author could imagine such tales, but also mildly hard to swallow. I appreciate the classic tale of King Arthur, so in the beginning I didn't appreciate this new futuristic approach.

Love Song - Richard Haffey

Book Description:
Abby and Jay Alfred are husband and wife, best of friends, residents of New York City in 1969. They are college professors and experts in the music of John Field and the writings of T.S. Eliot, respectively.
When Abby falls mysteriously ill Jay transforms their apartment into a dynamic retreat for healing and recovery, much to the chagrin of his in-laws. Surrounded by a few close friends, aided by two committed doctors, and supported by their students and some newly met strangers, the couple struggles heroically to overcome the odds of fighting disease and the threat of legal interference with their preference for home care. Outside the tumultuous world of 1969 roils around them with the social unrest of anti-war protests, the corrupting influence of drugs, and the suspension of medical malpractice, while the baseball Mets pulse the city's beat toward a world championship and the Americans first set foot on the moon.
But will they ever be able to get out again into that world together? How will Jay win the race against time, battle the despair and anger assailing them from all sides, break through Abby's coma to assure her of his constant love and bring her back from the brink of oblivion?

Author Bio:
Richard Haffey is a freelance writer and environmentalist from Connecticut and Cape Cod, where he and his wife make their home and enjoy their children and friends.

My Review:
This was a heartfelt tale of life and sacrifice, and what we do for those we love. It is a story about making a choice, that no one wants to make. Jay Alfred, one of the main characters, did so much for his wife, and admirably so. For those who thought love lost its' luster, after reading this story will have a glimmer of hope once again.
You can guess I enjoyed this book. It made me cry, though this story was more happiness and purity than I could have imagined. You really need to check it out.

My Review:
This was a truly lighthearted story, that I really loved. The characters were refreshing, as they live in a society that is kinder, even gentler, towards man. Living in a fast-paced city life, reading these stories are an escape for me.
The author wrote beautifully. Her words created the setting, characters and plot, which all pulled me in.
If I was to compare the writing to any known author, just to give you an idea of the pace, would be John Steinbeck. He happens to be one of my favorite authors, so not only is this a compliment to the writer, but it shows you how fluid the tale is.
I am recommending this book, to everyone, even teens.

Seven Guidelines for Middle-Ground Communication

By Marty Babits, LCSW, BCD,
Author of The Power of Middle Ground: A Couple's Guide to Renewing Your Relationship

If you need help regulating and resolving conflict, these guidelines are for you. They can help you make difficult conversations productive, steer you and your partner away from destructive talk, and help you nurture an atmosphere of emotional safety. Adopting these guidelines, whenever pertinent, will safeguard the middle ground within your relationship:

1.

Avoid generalizing and stereotyping. Do not generalize about your partner's moods. When you think you know how your partner feels, but don't stop to ask or listen, they'll often feel neglected and misunderstood. Rule of thumb: there is often a difference between how your partner feels and how you think they feel. Your partner's sense of emotional safety, as a result of generalizing, can become depleted.

2.

Do not blurt responses. Do you identify with the following statement: "I didn't even know what I was going to say until I heard myself saying it." If so, this is an especially important guideline for you. Monitor your thoughts while speaking with your partner. There is always more than one way to say something, choose according to the effect you want your remark to have. Do not blurt the first thing that comes to mind at your partner.

3.

No name calling. If you are disgusted with something that is going on and call your mate something mean, the communication flow stops. And turning it back on becomes more and more difficult, in proportion to the amount of name-calling that goes on. When thinking before speaking, edit out the put-downs. Basic as the guidelines may seem, under stress, sticking to them is a challenge for us all.

4.

Speak honestly and judiciously. The abiding ways that you feel -- positive and negative -- need to be represented in your dialogue with your partner. Keeping dominant thoughts and feelings buried will not further the relationship. But pay close attention to how you share information. Notice for signs that your partner is getting flooded. Do not keep talking if they are feeling overwhelmed! Conveying your messages with finesse and forethought will payoff big time in trust and emotional safety dividends.

5.

Develop patience. Sustain it. Patience within a specific talk and in the pacing of your dialogue overall can make a critical difference to relationship healing. Patience and humility blended together compose emotional stamina, which is fundamental to the creation of a secure long-term love relationship. Healing your relationship without patience? It's impossible. So work on this one!

6.

Think about what your partner says in terms of who your partner is. You need to develop a "relationship" perspective that features a good grasp of how the situation is understood by your partner as well as by yourself. Remember -- understanding how your partner feels from within his or her purview does not mean you are acknowledging that their perspective is correct. You are not surrendering your point of view. You are simply acknowledging that yours is not the only legitimate point of view.

7.

Time-out signal -- have it in place; use it as needed. Using time-outs can allow you a sense of control in the pacing of your dialogue. In the case of complex and/or difficult emotional issues this can make the difference between whether you can or can't discuss an issue productively. Without a pre-arranged signal to allow a safe method for temporarily suspending the dialogue, restarting it will be more difficult. Using time-outs does not mean that difficult issues go unaddressed. It does mean that partners have to work as a team to keep the flow of conversation going -- not simply within a single talk but between talks as well. Carve a niche in your relationship that honors this dimension of awareness and sensitivity.

Can these seven guidelines help save a floundering relationship? The short answer is yes. Yes, they can. If you follow them consistently, you will see results. Putting these into practice with your partner will help you both learn to understand each other better, and come to find your middle ground.

Better Than Lennon: The Music and Talent of Paul McCartney - John Cherry

Book Description:
Beginning the night of February 9, 1964, John Cherry was a Beatle fan. The group provided the best of music until their breakup in 1970. As solo artists, each Beatle continued to provide excellent music. Cherry makes the case that Paul McCartney was the most successful Beatle and the most successful solo artist from the group. The comparison is appropriately made to John Lennon's work, both as a Beatle and solo artist. The book is an in-depth examination of McCartney and Lennon music based on their fan's preferences. It also compares their individual talents and presents the opinions of those that worked with them or closely followed their music.

Author Bio:
The author with his first book, a small part of a collection of Beatles and Wings keepsakes, and the backing of a portion of his collection of numerous pictures and posters. This is the second book from Cherry. His first, War On U.S. How Policies and People are Destroying America, was released August of 2008.

©2010

My Review:
If you are a Lennon fan, than this book is not for you. The author of this book, not only titled it perfectly, but he clearly states he is a McCartney fan. This book, to me, is just a fan's strong viewpoints on the Beatles, as a group and individually, with some valid information thrown in to keep interest.
As for the content that was valuable, I learned a lot. I was a Beatles fan before, and yes a Lennon fan too, and will continue to be, but now I know more about their actual successes. I do wish however, that the author had thrown more in about George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They were kinda left out for the most part, and both had solo careers as well. In fact, Ringo still does!
All in all I am on the fence about this book. It's like spinach, and acquired taste... some will love it, and the rest will hate it. To each his own.

©2010

My Review:
Not only does Tim McGraw write beautiful Country love songs, but now he also writes a childrens' books. With the same fashion as his music, it was beautifully depicted. I love how he used his own family to create the book. The moral came to life easier using real people in a fictional setting. About the moral of the story, I absolutely loved it! He used his childs' dilemma as a story, to show and moralize how children can be the most thoughtful beings on earth. He did a great job on the book, and I would gladly read it to any child I know.
Definitely on my recommendations list.

Here is an excerpt from Marc's journal that is posted online:

"There is nothing that can prepare one for a murder trial. My family sits as the last few hours in Polly's life are dissected, analyzed, de-constructed, reconstructed, cross-referenced and compartmentalized. The constant assault on our sensibilities by horrible revelations that defy the principles of civilization seem overwhelming much of the time. It is impossible to withstand or rise above the continual dehumanizing facts that are revealed in a constant, monotonous stream of revelation. There is no room for anything but the processing of nightmarish information. The killer laughs throughout the video tape and I want to shout, yet I must sit unflinching and stone-faced for fear of causing a mistrial. Every day my family is drawn into the world of murder, mayhem, rape and deprivation and there is no way out."

Learn about effective ways to keep your children safe from harm and find out what you can do to help stop crimes against kids. Please tune in and call in with your questions for Marc this Friday 11-12 CST on http://toginet.com/shows/kitchenchat

My Review:
I love this cookbook, and it is a favorite in my house now. I had not tried to cook with coconut milk before, so I didn't know what to expect, but it was worth it.
It was so easy to make too. The prep was longer and harder than the actual cooking. Between the flavors and the smell, I couldn't wait to eat!
It didn't disappoint!
You know those times when you experiment with food and recipes and it all goes awry? This was not one of those times. Thankfully it was the most amazing thing I have made in a while, and I cook good food everyday....
Definitely going on the top of my cookbook pile in the kitchen, for easy access!!
I HIGHLY recommend you get a copy too. There is something in it for everyone.

Real Time Web for Old Time Books: The Benefit of Social Media for Publisher and Authors

By Fauzia Burke

Real Time Web was coined to describe online activities in real time -- from status updates on Facebook, to microblogging on Twitter to uploading photos and videos on other social media sites. With the ease of mobile devices like iPhones, this type of communication has grown tremendously in 2009. Now Google (video) is offering the power of real time web searching to millions everyday. Although you may cringe when considering the personal implication of searching your updates and Twitter feeds, you can't deny the benefits to publicity and marketing.

According to Nielsen, social media and blogs are now more popular than email. As marketers, this presents us with a great opportunity. Reader engagement is not only important in today's market, it is essential. Although your web site is important, a savvy marketer knows that a page on Facebook is even more important for interacting with fans and potential readers. With Google and Bing now offering real time search results, the ease, power and speed of sharing information is changing before our eyes. Word of mouth has never been shared faster or more easily. It is important to remember that social media is public communication, you probably should never share personal information, comments or thoughts you don't want spread. But you can't simply ignore what investors are calling a new Web Revolution.

By staying off of Twitter and Facebook as a marketer you are not only missing out on community building, but you are also unaware of the conversations taking place about you, your books, and your competition. Real time search results are changing the speed at which a conversation spreads online. It is more important than ever to manage brand and reputation on social media sites. Content is streaming live with or without your blessing.

Some fantastic sites that offer good information on Twitter conversations are http://topsy.com/ which shows how many people retweeted you. For example, if you do a topsy search on my name you'd see that my HuffPost blog about Facebook was retweeted 118 times, others were not as popular. http://sency.com/ allows you to search topics and conversations, and http://dailyrt.com/ allows you to track what is important to people right now.

These tools can allow you to stay on top of messaging. For marketing and publicity people, it can give you fresh ideas and leads for more exposure. For editors, it may give you ideas for your next book project and for authors it can most certainly show you what's important to your readers right now. Opinions are being shared online and in real time, and now through searches we can find them and notice trends and measure excitement.

Today if you do a search for Oprah on Google, the search results will include social media results, which means you can see what people said about Oprah a minute ago (see midway down). If that doesn't inspire awe (and a little fear) in you, I would be amazed.

Conversations are happening online in real time and now these conversations are being tracked, measured and searched. By becoming part of the community and paying attention to the dialogue around you, I believe your marketing efforts will benefit greatly this year and in the years to come. Real Time Web is becoming the norm -- there are tons of apps and programs coming that will make it easier for us to know what people are saying, where they are gathering, and what they are reading in real time.

Triangle Of Deception - Haggai Carmon

Book Description:
How do you penetrate the world's most secretive and tightly knit terrorist organization? Dan Gordon's only option is deception. Working undercover in a joint CIA/Mossad mission, he's on the hunt for the source of funding to Hezbollah. He has infiltrated a Lebanese network in Paraguay, only to realize the operation is far more wide-ranging than he's been told.

©2009

My Review:
This book reminded me of 24 the show. It had that same government/spy aspect. Although, I thought I would enjoy this book more than I did, while perusing its cover. I had no idea how much of the story was based on terrorism.
This is a typical story of a double agent, and his terrorist ties. Since this is what is plastered all over the news and papers every day, it was tough to read about as fiction. Once I got over the subject matter, I found myself becoming submerged into the intrigue of the main character Dan. By the end of the book, I had forgotten how little I originally disliked it.
A decent political thriller after all, and a must read for any fiction enthusiast!

Teaser Tuesday

Hosted by: http://shouldbereading.wordpress.com

* Grab your current read.
* Let the book fall open to a random page.
* Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12.
* You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from…that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given.
* Please avoid spoilers!

My Teaser:

"I don't get it," said Bob, sounding embarrassed. "If he thinks he'd already been working for them, won't his association with the Hezbollah label his previous connection as bogus?"

My Review:
Everyone has heard of a myth or legend, and wondered what is the real story behind it. This book is the most amazing look at various myths. There were even some I hadn't heard of, so that aspect, for me, is exactly what I want in a book.
I love the layout of the book, complete with beautiful illustrations and photographs of relics.
A must have for any mythology lover, or even if you are just keen.

My Review:
Being recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, I feel I need to learn everything I can about it, to further protect myself and take care of myself while I am young. When I had the opportunity to review this book, I jumped at it.
Being a book from the Canadian Diabetes Association, I knew the information would be accurate, insightful and valuable. I have learned a lot about my disease from doctors, specialists and family, but there were some tips and stats I learned from this book. I'm extremely grateful I got the chance to read this book and get that information.
This book will now be a reference guide to me. When I am unsure of something regarding my illness, I am sure to look to this book first.
I suggest if you have either type of Diabetes, or if you know someone who does, then get a copy. It could save your toes, or your life!

Cupidity - Hayley & Michael DiMarco

Book Description:
You’re a smart person. You really are. Most of the time. So why are you having such trouble making sense of your love life? Whether you’re single and wondering where your “one” could be hiding; head over heels in a new relationship and vowing that this time it’ll work; or finding that married life isn’t the thrilling adventure you’d once anticipated . . . you might be surprised to discover that the answer lies in your own ‘Cupidity’—stupid love. In this book, popular authors Hayley and Michael DiMarco identify 50 of the most common acts of Cupidity, ways to avoid them and learn from them, and some surprising things God has to say about relationships. With the help of their inside information, smart, successful love can be just around the corner.

Author Bios:
Hayley DiMarco is the best-selling author of more than 30 books, including Dateable and Marriable. She spent the early part of her career working for a little shoe company called Nike in Portland, Oregon. After three years with the "Swoosh," Hayley got fed up with the incessant rain of Portland and began to search for drier ground. Soon she found just the spot—Nashville, Tennessee, where she became the manager of promotions at Thomas Nelson Publishers. While operating as the brand manager of Nelson's new teen line, Hayley authored, edited, or had her hand in more than 36 different titles.
In 2002 Hayley left Nelson and founded Hungry Planet, a company intensely focused on feeding the world's appetite for truth by producing books and new media, taking on issues of faith and life with a distinctly modern voice.
Shortly after founding Hungry Planet, Hayley successfully completed a nationwide executive search for someone to run the company so she could focus on writing. She describes her husband, Michael, as her most successful business acquisition! Hayley and Michael are now the proud parents of Hungry Planet's 30-plus books, including 10 best sellers, three ECPA Christian Book Award finalists, one ECPA winner, and one amazing human, their daughter, Addison.

Michael DiMarco is the CEO of Hungry Planet. In addition to the nine books he has authored or coauthored, Michael also created The Hungry Planet Bible Project, a 10,000-mile road trip designed to give a voice to the hungry and homeless. Hayley and Michael are the proud parents of dozens of Hungry Planet books, including 11 best sellers, four ECPA Christian Book Award finalists, and one ECPA winner; and one amazing human, their daughter, Addison.

My Review:
This review is coming out at a perfect time. With Valentines Day a couple days away, there's no time like present to discuss relationships. That's exactly what this book is about.
I find most of the information in the book to be believable, however, I do also believe that this book won't pertain to every one. Each person is different, so each relationship must be as well. I am happy that these tips worked for Hayley and Michael, but it may not work for you, so don't live for it. Learn from it.
The one criticism I have is how jumbled the thoughts were inside the book. In the middle of a paragraph, it jumps to some cute drawing with tips inside, then you confusingly find your paragraph again. Happened a little too much for my liking.
I have to say though, I really loved the way the authors spoke candidly while writing. It was almost like having a conversation, not reading. (Minus the blips in paragraphs here and there.)
All in all, this book gets a 3/5 from me. Some will love it, and others will hate it. Really you have to decide for yourself.
