With a vibrant, fresh style Suzanne Woods Fisher brings readers into the world of a young Amish woman torn between following the man she loves--or joining the community of faith that sustains her, even as she questions some of the decisions of her elders. Her choice begins a torrent of change for her and her family, including a marriage of convenience to silent Daniel Miller. Both bring broken hearts into their arrangement--and secrets that have been held too long. Filled with gentle romance, The Choice opens the world of the Amish--their strong communities, their simple life, and their willingness to put each other first. Combined with Fisher's exceptional gift for character development, this novel, the first in a series, is a welcome reminder that it is never too late to find your way back to God.
One moment, Carrie Weaver is planning to elope with Lancaster Barnstormer Solomon Riehl, leaving their Amish community behind. The next, she is staring into a future as broken as her heart. Now Carrie faces a choice. An opportunity. But will this decision, this moment in time, change her life forever?

Author Bio:

Suzanne is a wife and mom, raiser of puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind, and an author of Christian books, both non-fiction and fiction.
Her relatives on my mother's side are Old Order German Baptist Brethren, also known as Dunkards. That's where her interest in Anabaptist traditions began. Suzanne's grandfather was born into a family of 13 children, started his career as a teacher in a one-room school house in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and ended it as one of the very first publishers of Christianity Today. "We called him "Deardad" even though he was a very stern fellow. Still, Deardad's life inspired me to write."
After college, Suzanne was a freelance writer for magazines and became a contributing editor to Christian Parenting Today. Her work has been featured in Today's Christian Woman, Marriage Partnership, Worldwide Challenge, among others. She took the plunge into books a few years ago and now she's hooked.

My Review:
I had a slight curiosity for the Amish, living in the vicinity of Amish country. You see the men and women on their horse and buggies, but you have no idea of the life they lead, other than religious devotion. I rather enjoyed this book, and how the author connected the Amish way to today's society. I think this book was beautifully written, and a great story.
I was a little disappointed in the ending. I love Disney endings, and this had one, but I wanted more. I felt it ended abruptly. After waiting for the whole book for Abel and Carrie to get together, I expected a wedding or something.
I won't hold it against the author though, and will still recommend this book to all my friends that read this genre.

ReplyDeleteHi Freda!! Thank you so much for reviewing "The Choice"...and your sweet comment on my blog today! I'm wondering where you live...found it interesting that you overlap with the Amish. So glad you want to read "The Waiting!" (Book 2!) Won't be long...:)

Nice review!
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed “The Choice” and look forward to reading Suzanne Woods Fisher’s next novel.
I thought the plot was great – robust and satisfying – like a flavourful wine. There were twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. There were love triangles, wise old grandmas, wise elders who gave loving counsel, caring sisters, jail birds, guarded secrets, mystery, and sweet, sweet romance. The chemistry between the two main characters was very believable and I enjoyed it immensely.
